O-9.8: The Objectives of Jihad

The caliph
(o-25) makes
war upon Jews, Christians, and Zoroastrians (N: provided
he has first invited them to enter Islam in faith and practice, and if
they will not, then invited them to enter the social order of Islam by
paying the non-Muslim poll tax (jizya, def: o-11.4) -which is the
significance of their paying it, not the money itself-while remaining
in their ancestral religions) (O: and the war continues) until they
become Muslim or else pay the non-Muslim poll tax (O: in
accordance
with the word of Allah Most High,

“Fight those who do not believe in Allah and the Last Day and who
forbid not what Allah and His messenger have forbidden-who do not
practice the religion of truth, being of those who have been given the
Book-until they pay the poll tax out of hand and are humbled” (Koran
9.29),

the time and place for which is before the final descent of Jesus (upon
whom be peace). After his final coming, nothing but Islam will be
accepted from them, for taking the poll tax is only effective until
Jesus’ descent (upon him and our Prophet be peace), which is the
divinely revealed law of Muhammad. The coming of Jesus does not entail
a separate divinely revealed law, for he will rule by the law of
Muhammad. As for the Prophet’s saying (Allah bless him and give him
peace),

“I am the last, there will be no prophet after me,”

this does not contradict the final coming of Jesus (upon whom be
peace), since he will not rule according to the Evangel, but as a
follower of our Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) ).

The caliph fights all other
peoples until they become Muslim (O: because they are
not a people with a Book, nor honored as such, and are not permitted to
settle with paying the poll tax (jizya) ) (n: though according to the
Hanafi school, peoples of all other religions, even idol worshippers,
are permitted to live under the protection of the Islamic state if they
either become Muslim or agree to pay the poll tax, the sole exceptions
to which are apostates from Islam and idol worshippers who are Arabs,
neither of whom has any choice but becoming Muslim (al-Hidaya sharh
Bidaya al-mubtadi’ (y-21), 6.48-49) ).

Why? Because that is what Allah commanded and Muhammad exemplified.
The citations below are to the Qur’an and three Hadith
collections, all of which are available on the web at a site maintained
by the Muslim Student Association at the University of Southern

The irreducible minimum you need to know about Islam is its nature:

  1. mercenary & predatory

  2. violent

  3. genocidal

  4. implacable

The war against humanity began in 623 and continues

    Tafsir

Tafsir are scholarly exegesis of the Qur’an using
parallel verses and relevant hadith. Tafsir Ibn kathir is the most

Sira

Sira are biographies of the Profit.  You can
purchase Guillaume’s translation of Hishham’s rescension of Sirat
Rasool Allah as The
Life of Muhammad.

ghazwat & sariya.

Ibn Sa’d’s Sira is less well known, but very
informative. Moe Dictated & dispatched numerous extortion letters.
When Ibn Sa’d opens, press and hold the Ctrl key, press the F key and
paste this expression into the search window: Yuhannah Ibn Rubbàh and
(other) chiefs of the people of Aylah.  That missive is
among the most explicit, leaving nothing to the imagination.

she reams indolent society a badly needed new orifice.  She has
much more than she can say in such a short time, but she gives us a
very good outline, drawing her points together to form a circle which
encompasses the globe full of issues.

Reading the Qur’an is not easy because it is
archaic, redundant and jumbled, lacking context & chronology.
The Noble Qur’an, translated by Hilali & Khan, is
reputed to be 95% accurate and contains parenthetical expressions from
tafsirs and the translator’s footnotes.  Several Surahs are
essential to understanding the malignantly militant nature of Islam: 2,
3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 33, 47, 48, 49 & 61.  You can select them
from a pick list at the top of the page.

Hadith are sayings of Muhammad, passed down from
mouth to ear by his companions.  They have been collected by
several scholars, the most widely accepted collection being that of Bukhari. Like the Qur’an, hadith collections
suffer from redundancy.  Begin with Books 52, 53 & 59, then
read the others if you have sufficient patience.

Tafsir are scholarly explanations of the Qur’an.
They use parallel verses and relevant ahadith to clarify the verses. Tafsir Ibn Kathir
is fairly complete and easily accessible. You can select the Surahs
listed above and read them instead of the Qur’an & hadith to save
time and effort.

Islamic biography and history are also important,
but less easily accessible than the Qur’an, hadith and tafsir.
Craig Winn compiled  selections  of the canon into a 1000
page book with the quotes compiled into handy appendices  “The Prophet of
Doom
“.

For those lacking the time, patience and ambition to
tackle the large tomes, there is a short book which encapsulates
the  most essential information: Suhas Majumdar’s “Jihad: The Islamic Doctrine of Permanent War“.

Pamela Geller raises the issue of Shari’ah: Islamic
law based on the Qur’an & hadith.  Much of it is arcane,
dealing with matters of prayer & ritual purity.  The really
important parts deal with “justice”, marriage & divorce.  It
will be easier for you go go to Amazon and buy a hard copy of Reliance
of the Traveller.  If you can tolerate a low resolution scan and
large, pdf, this link will get you into Chapter 9 of Book O;
“Justice”.You can scroll up to Books  N & M.

If you delve deeply into Reliance, you will discover
that divorce is affected by the husband’s thrice repeating “I divorce
you”.  You will discover that a father can force his virgin,
pre-pubescent daughter to marry the man of his choice.  You will
learn that a Christian woman married to a Muslim can not obtain child
custody in divorce.

Respond to Zawahiri’s Ransom Demands!!


ABC News reports that Zawahiri claims to have possession of an American citizen who disappeared in Pakistan. He is demanding outrageous concessions for releasing the captive.

If we had a President worthy of the title, he would curse Zawahiri, telling him to “go to Hell”.  He would reject Zawahiri’s demands and order the summary execution of one captured enemy combatant every day until Warren Weinstein is released alive and unharmed.

There must be no concession made to Islam, no negotiation, no surrender and no submission.  Instead, Islam must be eradicated from the earth because conquest and hostage takings are intrinsic sacraments of Islam. Let all men of good will rise up and curse Islam because of this fact which is clear on the face of its scripture, confirmed by its oral tradition, clarified by exegesis and codified in Shari’ah:

8:67. It is not for a Prophet that he should have prisoners of war (and free them with ransom) until he had made a great slaughter (among his enemies) in the land. You desire the good of this world (i.e. the money of ransom for freeing the captives), but Allâh desires (for you) the Hereafter. And Allâh is All-Mighty, All-Wise.

(It is not for a Prophet to have captives of war until he had made a great slaughter (among the enemies) in the land. You desire the commodities of this world, but Allah desires (for you) the Hereafter. Allah is Mighty and Wise. Were it not for a prior decree from Allah, a severe torment would have touched you for what you took.) (8:67-68)[The Command to strike the Enemies’ Necks, tighten Their Bonds, and then free Them either by an Act of Grace or for a Ransom]

 

9:5. Then when the Sacred Months (the Ist, 7th, 11th, and 12th months of the Islâmic calendar) have passed, then kill the Mushrikûn (see V.2:105) wherever you find them, and capture them and besiege them, and prepare for them each and every ambush. But if they repent and perform As-Salât (Iqâmat-as-Salât), and give Zakât, then leave their way free. Verily, Allâh is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

(And fight not with them at Al-Masjid Al-Haram, unless they fight you there. But if they attack you, then fight them. )﴿2:191﴾ Allah said here,

﴿وَخُذُوهُمْ﴾

(and capture them), executing some and keeping some as prisoners,

﴿وَاحْصُرُوهُمْ وَاقْعُدُواْ لَهُمْ كُلَّ مَرْصَدٍ﴾

(and besiege them, and lie in wait for them in each and every ambush), do not wait until you find them. Rather, seek and besiege them in their areas and forts, gather intelligence about them in the various roads and fairways so that what is made wide looks ever smaller to them. This way, they will have no choice, but to die or embrace Islam, [This is the Ayah of the Sword]

 

9:29. Fight against those who (1) believe not in Allâh, (2) nor in the Last Day, (3) nor forbid that which has been forbidden by Allâh and His Messenger (4) and those who acknowledge not the religion of truth (i.e. Islâm) among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), until they pay the Jizyah with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.

This honorable Ayah was revealed with the order to fight the People of the Book, after the pagans were defeated, the people entered Allah’s religion in large numbers, and the Arabian Peninsula was secured under the Muslims’ control. Allah commanded His Messenger to fight the People of the Scriptures, Jews and Christians, on the ninth year of Hijrah, and he prepared his army to fight the Romans and called the people to Jihad announcing his intent and destination. The Messenger sent his intent to various Arab areas around Al-Madinah to gather forces, and he collected an army of thirty thousand. [The Order to fight People of the Scriptures until They give the Jizyah]

 

Sahih Bukhari Volume 1, Book 8, Number 387:
Narrated Anas bin Malik:
Allah’s Apostle said, “I have been ordered to fight the people till they say: ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah.’ And if they say so, pray like our prayers, face our Qibla and slaughter as we slaughter, then their blood and property will be sacred to us and we will not interfere with them except legally and their reckoning will be with Allah.” Narrated Maimun ibn Siyah that he asked Anas bin Malik, “O Abu Hamza! What makes the life and property of a person sacred?” He replied, “Whoever says, ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah’, faces our Qibla during the prayers, prays like us and eats our slaughtered animal, then he is a Muslim, and has got the same rights and obligations as other Muslims have.”

When a child or a woman is taken captive, they become slaves by the fact of capture, and the woman’s previous marriage is immediately annulled.

O9.14

When an adult male is taken captive, the caliph (def: o25) considers the interests (O: of Islam and the Muslims) and decides between the prisoner’s death, slavery, release without paying anything, or ransoming himself in exchange for money or for a Muslim captive held by the enemy.

If the prisoner becomes a Muslim (O: before the caliph chooses any of the four alternatives) then he may not be killed, and one of the other three alternatives is chosen.

 

Why do they attack us? Because of Islam’s damnable doctrines, not poverty, ignorance, repression or occupation. For the same damnable doctrines explained to the Persians and to John Q. Adams & Thomas Jefferson.

Sahih Bukhari Volume 4, Book 53, Number 386:
Our Prophet, the Messenger of our Lord, has ordered us to fight you till you worship Allah Alone or give Jizya (i.e. tribute); and our Prophet has informed us that our Lord says:– “Whoever amongst us is killed (i.e. martyred), shall go to Paradise to lead such a luxurious life as he has never seen, and whoever amongst us remain alive, shall become your master.”

In 1786 Jefferson and John Adams went to negotiate with Tripoli’s envoy to London, Ambassador Sidi Haji Abdrahaman or (Sidi Haji Abdul Rahman Adja). They asked him by what right he extorted money and took slaves. Jefferson reported to Secretary of State John Jay, and to the Congress:

The ambassador answered us that [the right] was founded on the Laws of the Prophet (Mohammed), that it was written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have answered their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as prisoners, and that every Mussulman (or Muslim) who should be slain in battle was sure to go to heaven.

Exactly what part of that do you not comprehend?  What mental or moral defect prevents you from recognizing the ultimate evil and demanding its extinction?  Do you carry your brain between your buttocks?

This is not hate speech, it is a statement of verifiable facts and valid opinion based on those facts. This is not incitement to violence, it is a demand for official recognition of the state of war declared by Moe in 623 and prosecuted against us since the War of Revolution.  This is not a call for genocide and extermination camps, it is a disrespectful demand for effective retaliation against attack and the permanent prevention of repeat attacks. There is no substitute for victory. Victory is the eradication of Islam.

While there are Muslims living upon the face of the earth who believe Allah’s promise of Paradise if they wage war against us and his threat of eternal burning if they do not, we shall have neither peace nor security.  We have two alternatives: cause them to quit believing or quit living.  Lets get started immediately, ten years  late.

Geert Wilders Trial: Deceptive Commentary


One of my Google Alerts led me to a post at Islam In Europe which disclosed the existence of an open letter from a group of Islam experts to the court In Amsterdam which is persecuting Geert Wilders.

De Volkskrant, the  Dutch newspaper used by the prosecutors to document what Geert Wilders allegedly said in violation of Dutch hate speech law, published  a letter from a group of six Islam experts. It appears that this is the first of four “fact sheets” they intend to issue on the subject.

Unfortunately, the experts have engaged in the  Islamic art of al-taqeyya & kitman.  This blog post  exposes their lies.

Islam is a violent religion.

Rebuttal:

Mr Wilders refers, in support of its truths, often to the Koran. Please bring our professional knowledge of the Koran, to review his statements and method of quoting. We rely on taking the authoritative view of Professor F. Leemhuis, (Union Book 2007, http://www.bijbelenkoran.nl).

  • Wilders said: “Islam means submission and conversion of non-Muslims.” “A religion that seeks to eliminate others.” Dv 14
    • But in the Qur’an: “No compulsion in religion.” K. 2:256

The experts like Pickthall’s translation, so I will quote it, with a link to a table of ten parallel translations.

2:256. There is no compulsion in religion. The right direction is henceforth distinct from error. And he who rejecteth false deities and believeth in Allah hath grasped a firm handhold which will never break. Allah is Hearer, Knower.

To discover the circumstances behind the revelation of this ayeh, read Ibn Kathir’s Tafsir: No Compulsion in Religion.  Some of the Ansar had sworn to raise their children as Jews. When those Ansar converted, Muhammad did not force them to convert their children.  Despite this specificity, Ibn Kathir says that the ayeh has general applicability.  Another ayeh bears directly on this issue.

10:99. And if thy Lord willed, all who are in the earth would have believed together. Wouldst thou (Muhammad) compel men until they are believers?
10:100. It is not for any soul to believe save by the permission of Allah. He hath set uncleanness upon those who have no sense.

Unfortunately for the experts,  other ayat contradict  those three cited above.  At first glance,  Surah Al-Imran 110 appears to be irrelevant. But there is a hadith which clearly explains the meaning of the clause I have highlighted.

3:110. Ye are the best community that hath been raised up for mankind. Ye enjoin right conduct and forbid indecency; and ye believe in Allah. And if the People of the Scripture had believed it had been better for them. Some of them are believers; but most of them are evil-livers.

Sahih Bukhari  Volume 6, Book 60, Number 80:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Verse:–“You (true Muslims) are the best of peoples ever raised up for mankind.” means, the best of peoples for the people, as you bring them with chains on their necks till they embrace Islam.

The wording varies slightly because Khan prefers his own translation of the Koran.  It is obvious that bringing disbelievers  to Islam in chains is not congruent with “no compulsion”.  It is also obvious that  hadith which contradict the Koran can not be authentic. How then do you explain its inclusion in the most authentic of the six canonical collections?  Is there something more?  Of course there is.

8:39. And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is all for Allah. But if they cease, then lo! Allah is Seer of what they do.

This ayeh answers two questions:

  1. Is Islam violent?
  2. Is Islam compulsive?

The verb is clear and obvious: fight.  Al-Anfal 39 is in the form of a fight until loop, with a compound terminal condition.

  • persecution is no more
  • religion is all for Allah.

Persecution is a reference to the Meccan habit of hassling Muslims, who were viewed as a threat to their livelihood. The second part of the compound terminal condition is absolutely clear:  only Allah is worshiped.   Click through to the parallel translations and observe the wording of the other translations.  The obvious meaning is  confirmed by confirmed by Ibn Kathir’s Tafsir: The Order to fight to eradicate Shirk and Kufr.

One hadith confirms the meaning of  this ayeh with extreme clarity. I have added emphasis to make the critical sentence  stand out.

Sahih Bukhari Volume 1, Book 8, Number 387:

Besides  several variants of that hadith, there are two others which remove all doubt. I will quote  excerpts, linking them to the hadith at USC-MSA for those who wish to read the context.

If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from them the Jizya. If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off your hands. If they refuse to pay the tax, seek Allah’s help and fight them...

Our Prophet, the Messenger of our Lord, has ordered us to fight you till you worship Allah Alone or give Jizya (i.e. tribute); and our Prophet has informed us that our Lord says:– “Whoever amongst us is killed (i.e. martyred), shall go to Paradise to lead such a luxurious life as he has never seen, and whoever amongst us remain alive, shall become your master.”

Reliance of the Traveller, the handbook of Islamic law, provides the ultimate confirmation. The clause I emphasized says it all.

The six eminent professors  claimed to refute Wilders with a single ayeh. Is it possible that those scholars with doctoral degrees in the field are unaware of the conflicting ayat, hadith and Shari’ah, or were they practicing the art of kitman, lying by obfuscation?

  • Wilders says: “And the Qur’an is the Mein Kampf of a religion that seeks to eliminate others …”
    • Mein Kampf (My struggle) calls for no more war.  The Koran is sometimes called for violence, in other cases to peace and reconciliation, for example:
      • “You will not shed each other’s blood.” K.2: 84-
      • “God calls for the house of peace.” K.10: 25
      • “Does God not an obstacle …  to …  peace among the people. “K.2: 224
      • “Think of God’s mercy to you when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and by His grace you became brethren;” K.3: 103

It seems that Hitler was intent on  imposing his racist system by force, invading much of Europe.  History shows us that Muhammad and his rightly guided caliphs  acted the same way in Arabia, Africa, Asia & Eastern Europe.

Take a good close look at the expert’s citation to 2:84.   What does it mean? Perhaps we should examine the full ayeh.

2:84. And when We made with you a covenant (saying): Shed not the blood of your people nor turn (a party of) your people out of your dwellings. Then ye ratified (Our covenant) and ye were witnesses (thereto).

This ayeh is about  infighting among the nation,  it is not about attacking other nations.  Lets give the next citation the same treatment.

10:25. And Allah summoneth to the abode of peace, and leadeth whom He will to a straight path.

This ayeh is explained in  Ibn Kathir’s Tafsir: Invitation to the Everlasting Gifts that do not vanish.

(And Allah calls to the Abode of Peace) When Allah mentioned the swiftness of this world and its termination, He invited people to Paradise and encouraged them to seek it. He called it the Abode of Peace.

See how passive Islam is?  Allah invites people to Paradise, the house of peace. Do the experts understand what a Muslim must do to gain admission to Paradise?  He must fight in Allah’s cause, participating in Jihad, killing and being killed to gain one of the best seats. See At-Taubah 111 & As-Saff 10-13 for the gritty details.  Would they try to fool us again?  Examine their next citation to find out.

2:224. And make not Allah, by your oaths, a hindrance to your being righteous and observing your duty unto Him and making peace among mankind. Allah is Hearer, Knower.

Ordinarily, I would quote the context to show you the egregious nature of the expert’s  deception, in this case I will not, because of the sexually explicit nature  of the ayeh which proceeds 224. Instead, I will provide a link to three parallel translations hosted by USC-MSA, which you can easily scroll to view the context without clicking extra links. 2:223.  Once again, Ibn Kathir’s Tafsir gives us a vital clue to the meaning of the ayeh in question: The Prohibition of swearing to abandon a Good Deed.

Allah commands, `You should not implement your vows in Allah’s Name to refrain from pious acts and severing the relations with the relatives, if you swear to abandon such causes.’(And make not Allah’s (Name) an excuse in your oaths) means, “Do not vow to refrain from doing good works. (If you make such vow then) break it, pay the Kaffarah and do the good work.”

If you did not read the full context earlier, click the next button in the tafsir, scroll down to the bottom and read 2:226. It will then become clear to you that the experts misquoted an ayeh out of context for the purpose of deceiving the court by perverting the meaning of the verse.  Lets check the next citation.

3:103. And hold fast, all of you together, to the cable of Allah, and do not separate. And remember Allah’s favour unto you: How ye were enemies and He made friendship between your hearts so that ye became as brothers by His grace; and (how) ye were upon the brink of an abyss of fire, and He did save you from it. Thus Allah maketh clear His revelations unto you, that haply ye may be guided,

To discover the context, begin at 3:98 and  keep reading through 3:198.  Ibn Kathir explains this ayeh in his tafsir: The Necessity of Holding to the Path of Allah and the Community of the Believers. I have removed the Arabic script and emphasized the key part of this excerpt.

(And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allah, and be not divided among yourselves.) It was said that,  (to the Rope of Allah) refers to Allah’s covenant, just as Allah said in the following Ayah,  (Indignity is put over them wherever they may be, except when under a covenant (of protection) from Allah, and from men;) ﴿3:112﴾, in reference to pledges and peace treaties. (and remember Allah’s favor on you, for you were enemies one to another but He joined your hearts together, so that, by His grace, you became brethren) ﴿3:103 ﴾.This was revealed about the Aws and Khazraj. During the time of Jahiliyyah, the Aws and Khazraj were at war and had great hatred, enmity and ill feelings towards each other, causing long conflicts and battles to occur between them. When Allah brought Islam, those among them who embraced it became brothers who loved each other by Allah’s grace, having good ties for Allah’s sake and helping each other in righteousness and piety.

This  ayeh is about Muslims being united in warfare against disbelievers, not about making peace with disbelievers. Another ayeh, which Muslims will not quote to us, exposes the reality of Islam’s attitude toward peace.

47:35.So do not falter and cry out for peace when ye (will be) the uppermost, and Allah is with you, and He will not grudge (the reward of) your actions.

The meaning should be obvious to you. If it is not, refer to Ibn Kathir’s Tafsir: Nullifying the Disbelievers’ Deeds and the Command to chase Them.

(So do not lose heart and beg for peace while you are superior.) meaning, in the condition of your superiority over your enemy. If, on the other hand, the disbelievers are considered more powerful and numerous than the Muslims, then the Imam (general commander) may decide to hold a treaty if he judges that it entails a benefit for the Muslims. This is like what Allah’s Messenger did when the disbelievers obstructed him from entering Makkah and offered him treaty in which all fighting would stop between them for ten years. Consequently, he agreed to that.

Fitna

The experts advance to charges related to the short documentary created and published by Geert Wilders.

  • In the film Fitna quotes below were presented, together with “images of the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York (11/9/2001), and the attacks by Muslim extremists in Madrid and London, accompanied by images of victims.” DV7
  • Wilders cites a half sentence from Surah 47 verse 4
    “If you have an encounter with those who disbelieve than hew the necks of them and when ye have caused a bloodbath bind them in chains.” (Translation unknown, Theo van Gogh in focus)
  • Wilders suggests that this called for a Muslim in peacetime ‘infidels’ to kill. This suggestion is reinforced by the images of bombings of civilians in peacetime. With this half quoting of the Quran verse, he in trouble: the enemy is apparently slain first and then be bound in irons. Why corpses seem to be put in chains is not clear.

    The same verse, is now complete:

    “And when you have those who disbelieve [in battle] meet, turn them dead, but if you then prevail over them have obtained fascinates them firmly,
    later as a favor to them or release them or to buy them separately, when the burden of the war are made. “Sura 47 verse 4 Leemhuis:

    The full quote shows:

    • that this is a war is to kill enemy troops on the battlefield, and not to attack civilians in peacetime,
    • according to the Koran quote must stop killing one soldier when once more prevails. There is no elimination of the enemy.
    • the enemy from that moment must be captured to him after the war to be released.

This is in line with modern international law on war prisoner of war.

Lets take a close look at the cited ayeh.

47:4. Now when ye meet in battle those who disbelieve, then it is smiting of the necks until, when ye have routed them, then making fast of bonds; and afterward either grace or ransom till the war lay down its burdens. That (is the ordinance). And if Allah willed He could have punished them (without you) but (thus it is ordained) that He may try some of you by means of others. And those who are slain in the way of Allah, He rendereth not their actions vain.

Did  the experts quote the full verse?  Is the translation accurate?  Several translators use different expressions:

  • when you have killed and wounded many of them
  • made wide slaughter among them
  • until ye have massacred them
  • till ye have made a great slaughter among them
  • until ye have made a great slaughter among them

http://www.openburhan.net/ displays a break down of the Arabic text:      اثخنتموهم – you (p) exceeded in killing them/you weakened them;  the dictionary they link to  defines the Arabic word as subdued.  Note the phrase I highlighted; how does it compare to the variant expressions in the other translations?

Ibn Kathir has something important to tell us about this ayeh. The Command to strike the Enemies’ Necks, tighten Their Bonds, and then free Them either by an Act of Grace or for a Ransom

It appears that this Ayah was revealed after the battle of Badr. At that time, Allah reproached the believers for sparing many of the enemy’s soldiers, and holding too many captives in order to take ransom from them.(It is not for a Prophet to have captives of war until he had made a great slaughter (among the enemies) in the land. You desire the commodities of this world, but Allah desires (for you) the Hereafter. Allah is Mighty and Wise. Were it not for a prior decree from Allah, a severe torment would have touched you for what you took.) (8:67-68)

The experts have played fast and loose with the facts. They cited page 7 of the indictment as linking the images of the devastation in London, Madrid & New York  to 47:4.  The Koran references on that page, associated with those images, are: 8:60 and 4:56, associated with the next frame.

47:4 is not displayed until three frames later.  The learned expert professors took the Koran out of context, but were not satisfied with that trick, they  also took the indictment out of context!

8:60, which is associated with the images of devastation, commands Muslims to accrue weapons and war horses to strike terror into the hearts of enemies, both known and unknown. 8:57, not cited in the documentary, commands Muslims to punish their victims severely to serve as an example for others they wish to threaten.

If thou comest on them in the war, deal with them so as to strike fear in those who are behind them, that haply they may remember.

  • Wilders Sura 8 verse 60: “Make preparations against them with what you can to force people to take this horse and to terrorize, terrorize Allah’s enemy and your enemy.” Dv7
  • Surah 8: 60-61 Pickthall: “And to make them as good as you can and deployable armaments horses ready for God’s enemy and your enemy so intimidating and apart from those others that you do not know, but God knows . And what you also helping to give God’s way, you will be reimbursed and you will not be wronged. And if they are inclined to peace, make this tendency and also put your trust in God; “
  • The translation of Wilders appears without a source, wherein ‘terrorize’ ie “the systematic instill terror by violence, by terrifying violence and control.” Leemhuis translates ‘instill fear’ “This is equal to scare away someone: a proven military strategy by means of war drums, production of weapons-without actually use – to persuade the enemy to refrain from violence. The deterrence strategy shown to prevent weapons of war. Compare the NATO strategy against the Soviet Union in the Cold War. The slogan of the NATO armed to the teeth at the time was “Peace is our Profession”. It worked.

Lets compare translations.

Make ready for them all thou canst of (armed) force and of horses tethered, that thereby ye may dismay the enemy of Allah and your enemy, and others beside them whom ye know not. Allah knoweth them. Whatsoever ye spend in the way of Allah it will be repaid to you in full, and ye will not be wronged.[Pickthall]

  • to strike terror into . [Abdullah Yusuf Ali]
  • frighten thereby the enemy [Shakir]
  • terrify thereby [Arberry]
  • strike terror into [Rodwell]
  • strike a terror into [Sale]

Lets see what  Muhammad had to say about terrorism.

1. Allah made me victorious by awe, (by His frightening my enemies) for a distance of one month’s journey.
I have been made victorious with terror (cast in the hearts of the enemy),

What is the practical application of this tactic?

33:26. And He brought those of the People of the Scripture who supported them down from their strongholds, and cast panic into their hearts. Some ye slew, and ye made captive some.

  • “Destroy the infidels and polytheists, your (Allah’s) enemies and the enemies of the religion. Allah, count them and kill them until the very end. And let no one about. “Dv 7

    This sentence, with no source, is contrary to the Koran above quotes in their entirety in that direction, rather than a controlled ‘total war’ pages, and contrary to the Koran quote “no compulsion in religion. 2:256

But it is not contrary to 8:39 & 9:29 nor is it contrary to the infamous genocide hadith.  The quote is from a video of an Imam rousing the rabble to Jihad.

  • The comparisons between the texts as presented by Mr Wilders and the existing scientific knowledge of the contents of the Koran, we conclude first that the conclusion of Mr Wilders is not based on facts, but only on improperly constructed “facts”.

Scientific knowledge? Being Muslim makes them scientists, no reference to tafsir, hadith or  jurisprudence is required, just scientific expertise.

  • Second, a more general question arises about the statement of Mr Wilders that Islam is a violent religion. Could it actually be true that a religion is violent?

So Islam is peaceful, not violent?  How then do you explain the title of the 8:th surah: “The Spoils” ? Why does the “religion of peace” need rules for allocation and division of spoils of war?  Why does it need terms such as fei & ganimah to describe spoils of war?  Why did Allah give Muhammad special dispensation to accrue spoils?  Why did Allah say “Ye desire the lure of this world” to Muhammad in 8:67?    Why did Allah promise “abundant spoils that you will capture“. Why does Shari’ah say :”the caliph makes war on Jews and Christians”  and “the caliph fights all other peoples”?

  • Religion is a set of values, norms, and writings. Religion is preached and adhered to by people. Violence is an action committed by people and groups of people, not a religion. Religion itself is not violent or peaceful.

How do you explain the existence of Surah Al-Anfal & At-Taubah, which are entirely dedicated and devoted to warmongering?  How do you explain the existence of books of jihad  or expedition in four of the six canonical hadith collections?   How do you explain the communal obligation to attack disbelievers at least once in every year?  Doubt this?  Click the link above to Reliance of the Traveller, Search for Book O, Search for Chapter 9 and start reading.

  • Claiming a  religion as violent is a suggestive way to accuse a group of people, some believers, as being violent.

How did Hindu Kush get its name?  What does it mean?  Why are Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen, Syria, Iran and Egypt Islamic?  Was violence involved?

  • Scientific research indicates that in the Quran, as in the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Bible, both incitements to violence and peace are to be found. This can be verified by anyone.

Show me the New Testament book, chapter and verse  in which Jesus Christ issues open ended, outcome oriented commands to engage in conquest  without geographic or temporal limits; the equivalent of 8:39 & 9:29.   The ancient Hebraic conquest/genocide imperatives were limited to particular places and people, once they were completed, they expired.  Islamic jihad continues from 610 to Judgment Day.

The lesson learned: Islam is not more violent than Christianity.

  • Christianization and Islamization have been globally accepted voluntary and partly by force, if .., because fair to say that much about that history is not known.
  • It is known that many more victims died in internal conflicts among Christians, than the relatively few wars between Christians and Muslims. Conflicts such as the Thirty Years War or the war between Turkey and Persia dragged on longer and cost more casualties than the war against the Turks eg culminating in the Battle of Vienna.
  • The time when it was generally accepted that one faith is spread by the sword has passed. This applies to both Islam and Christianity. Extremists are an exception to the general consensus.

Christianity was co-opted by the Roman Empire.  Unlike Islam, it has no intrinsic war imperative.  Islam has a 1400 year record of rapine, accruing an estimated total of   270*106 victims.

Those are not extremists, they are salafists, emulators of Muhammad.  Muslims are commanded to  obey Allah and his Messenger. “Indeed in the Messenger of Allâh (Muhammad ) you have a good example to follow” .  What did he do?

Sahih Bukhari Volume 5, Book 59, Number 285:

Narrated Abu Ishaq:

Once, while I was sitting beside Zaid bin Al-Arqam, he was asked, “How many Ghazwat did the Prophet undertake?” Zaid replied, “Nineteen.” They said, “In how many Ghazwat did you join him?” He replied, “Seventeen.” I asked, “Which of these was the first?” He replied, “Al-‘Ashira or Al-‘Ashiru.”

Terrorism

  • Terrorists are not representative of Islam

    Radical Islamists committing attacks and now regularly seek to acquire state power in Muslim-majority countries. The latter, however, they very rarely succeed, what makes them resentful, and leads to new attacks. Most of the terrorist attacks by Islamists, have Muslim victims. Logically, the vast majority of Muslims disapproves of this violence.

Islam is not logical, it is a way of life imposed on people by force. 3:151 & 8:12 sanctify and mandate terrorism. 33:26 & 59:2 exemplify it. Islam’s founder declared that he was made victorious by terror.

  • There are also peaceful sounds within Islamic circles.

    Every Muslim knows that the word “Islam” comes from the same root as the word ‘salaam’ (Hebrew: “Shalom”), in both languages it means ‘peace’. With this knowledge, 138 (grown to 307) authoritative Muslims, political and spiritual leaders and intellectuals, have sent in 2007 an open letter to their Christian counterparts.

    “The future of the world depends on peace between Muslims and Christians. The basis for peace and understanding already exists … the love of God and neighbor in both religions and preached in both the Bible and the Koran can be found. “

Wikiislam has an etymology chart which makes the matter clear:

The Ulema’s missive “A Common Word between Us and You”. is an obvious deception,  it is an extortion letter cleverly  disguised as an overture of peace.  One blog: Go Burn With Muhammad is entirely devoted to pointing out the malignant malarkey in that missive.


Arabist Hans Jansen wrote a brief rebuttal, this is a Google translation. .

The letter of retired professors, Wilders on the process, about the peacefulness of Islam, a trifle late to be desired. There are no references to sermons in the mosque, to manuals of Sharia, or Koranic commentaries. Also, the letter was not by Muslim religious leaders meeondertekend. The most important Muslim theologian is Tofiq Dibi agrees. The letter is a dream: if only that Islam is like the letter writers make.

In sermons in the mosque, in the manuals of the sharia and the Koran commentaries calling for the harassment, murder and make war on dissent. It is very easy to control. The Koran itself can very easily be interpreted as an instruction to intimidation, assassination, murder, and war – but when the Amsterdam court says that the true meaning of the Qur’anic text is just very peaceful, then all the problems with Islam course solved in one stroke. It is inconceivable for Muslims the Koran as a license to kill would dare conceive as the Amsterdam court maintains that the Koran is not actually a license to kill is.

Documenting the ” Islamic Response”


I have discovered an editing error in  my recent post: Stop the Trial: Khalid Sheikih Mohamnmed Confessed! the document link is incorrect as published.
The correct link to the pdf file containing the Islamic response to  the accusations against  K.S.M. etal. is:  The Islamic Response to the Government’s Nine Accusations.

That document contains several references to the Qur’an.  My intention in this post is to give you access to the source of those references and their meaning.  The quotes are linked to three parallel translations at USC-MSA for easy context checking.

The preamble begins with this statement.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate

You will find those same words in the transcript of Flight 93’s cockpit voice recorder.  Both the act of mass murder and the boast are couched in terms of service to the demon whose words are quoted to amplify the text of the boast. Both are acts of worship, neither is secular.

The first Qur’an quote is used to explain the covert nature of their operation.

((0 you believers! Take your precautions, and either go forth (on on expedition) in parties, or go forth together.))

That ayeh is 4:71. Ibn Kathir  does not mention secrecy or covert operations in his tafsir of 4:71. Maududi does not mention it, nor does Abdullaj Yusuf Ali.

In the matter of attacking civilians, five ayat are quoted.

((The sacred month is for the sacred month, and for the prohibited things, there is the law of equality. Then, whoever transgresses the prohibition against you, you transgress likewise against him.))

That ayeh is 2:194, explained here by Ibn Kathir.

((And there is (a saving of) life for you in AI-Qisas (The law of equality in punishment), 0 men of understanding, that you may become A/~Muttaquin (the pious).))

That ayeh is 2:179, explained here by Ibn kathir.

((The recompense for an evil is an evil like thereof.))

That ayeh is 42:40, explained here by Ibn Kathir.

((Life for life, eye for an eye, nose for a nose, ear for an ear, tooth for a tooth, and wounds equal for equal.))

That ayeh is 5:45, explained here by Ibn Kathir.

((… Let there be no hostility except to those who practice oppression.))

This text does not agree with the translation I use for 2:193. Shakir’s translation is the closest match, note, however, that the quote is out of context. Ibn Kathir’s explanation is here.  By selecting that fragment of  the ayeh, the authors were creating a false impression of benign passivity.  The full text of 2:193 follows, as translated by Shakir.

And fight with them until there is no persecution, and religion should be only for Allah, but if they desist, then there should be no hostility except against the oppressors.

Ibn Kathir’s tafsir of this ayeh is titled “The Order to fight until there is no more Fitnah”.

Allah then commanded fighting the disbelievers when He said:

﴿حَتَّى لاَ تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌ﴾

(…until there is no more Fitnah) meaning, Shirk. This is the opinion of Ibn `Abbas, Abu Al-`Aliyah, Mujahid, Al-Hasan, Qatadah, Ar-Rabi`, Muqatil bin Hayyan, As-Suddi and Zayd bin Aslam.

For an overly aggressive interpretation of  this ayeh, see the footnote by Hilali & Khan. The accused intend, by the selection of those ayat, to create a false impression that their attack was justified in retaliation for attacks by us.  From the Islamic viewpoint, resisting their attacks is oppression & aggression. That attitude is one of the fruits of supremacism & triumphalism.

They answer the accusation of war crimes with these quotes.

((To those against whom war is waged, permission is given (to fight,) because they are wronged and verily, Allah is most powerful for their aid.))

That is 22:39, explained here by Ibn Kathir.

((And fight in the way of Allah those who fight you, but be not the transgressor, Allah likes not the transgressors.))

That is 2:190,  explained here by Ibn Kathir.

Regarding the hijacking charge, they quote the verse of the sword.

((“then fight and slay the pagans wherever you find them, and seize them, and besiege them and lie in wait for them in each and every ambush,))

That is 9:5, explained here by Ibn Kathir.

In answering the charge of terrorism, they cite an ayeh which sanctifies terrorism.

((Soon shall we cast terror into the hearts of the unbelievers, for that they joined companies with Allah, for which he has sent no authority; There place will be the fire; and evil is the home of the wrongdoers.))

That is 3:151, Ibn Kathir’s tafsir is here.

((Against them make ready your strength to the utmost of your power, including steeds of war, to strike terror into the heart of the enemies of Allah and your enemies.))

That is 8:60, Ibn Kathir explains it here. to delve a little deeper into terrorism, refer to  this tafsir.

((Of a truth you (Muslims) are more feared in their (the infidels from Christians, Jews, and others) hearts, than Allah.
This is because they are men devoid of understanding.))

That quote is from 59:13, explained here by Ibn Kathir.

((They fight not against you even together, except in fortified townships, or from behind walls, their enmity among themselves is very great, you would think that they were united, but their hearts are divided. That is because they are a people who
understand not.))

That is 59:14, explained here by Ibn Kathir.

Last but not least, in answer to supporting terrorism, they return to the second surah.

((And spend of your substance in the cause of Allah, and make not your own hands contribute to your destruction, but do good; for Allah loves those who do good.))

That is 2:195, explained here by Ibn Kathir. Be sure to read the hadith used by Ibn Kathir to explain the meaning of casting yourself to destruction!

In the preamble, the authors  made a statement which requires exploration.

Nevertheless, it would have been the greatest religious duty to fight you over your infidelity.

They assert that they fight us in retaliation, but claim a religious obligation to fight us because we are not Muslims.  While they did not document the obligation to attack kuffar, it is not difficult to find in Surah al-Anfal & at-Taubah.

  • 8:38. Say to those who have disbelieved, if they cease (from disbelief) their past will be forgiven. But if they return (thereto), then the examples of those (punished) before them have already preceded (as a warning).
  • 8:39. And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and polytheism: i.e. worshipping others besides Allâh) and the religion (worship) will all be for Allâh Alone [in the whole of the world ]. But if they cease (worshipping others besides Allâh), then certainly, Allâh is All-Seer of what they do.

I added emphasis to the critical phrases. Ayeh 38 specifies the subject: disbelievers. Ayeh 39 specifies the verb: fight and the compound terminal condition no resistance and no shirk.  Notice the title of Ibn Kathir’s tafsir of this verse: The Order to fight to eradicate Shirk and Kufr.

In the next surah, Allah commands Muslims to make war on Jews, Christians and Zoroastrians until they are subjugated and make annual extortion payments.

  • 9:29. Fight against those who (1) believe not in Allâh, (2) nor in the Last Day, (3) nor forbid that which has been forbidden by Allâh and His Messenger (4) and those who acknowledge not the religion of truth (i.e. Islâm) among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), until they pay the Jizyah with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.

Several hadith confirm those commands, but this one, in my opinion, is the clearest. I added emphasis to make the critical elements stand out.

  • Moe was ordered to fight because Allah said “fight them”.
  • The victims must become Muslims to save themselves by:
    • testimony to Allah’s deity
    • prescribed prayers
    • prescribed prayer orientation
    • prescribed slaughter
    • prescribed dietary laws.
  • Until we do:
    • our blood and property are not sacred
    • we have no rights.
  • Sahih Bukhari Volume 1, Book 8, Number 387:
  • Narrated Anas bin Malik:
    Allah’s Apostle said, “I have been ordered to fight the people till they say: ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah.’ And if they say so, pray like our prayers, face our Qibla and slaughter as we slaughter, then their blood and property will be sacred to us and we will not interfere with them except legally and their reckoning will be with Allah.” Narrated Maimun ibn Siyah that he asked Anas bin Malik, “O Abu Hamza! What makes the life and property of a person sacred?” He replied, “Whoever says, ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah’, faces our Qibla during the prayers, prays like us and eats our slaughtered animal, then he is a Muslim, and has got the same rights and obligations as other Muslims have.”

Reliance of the Traveller, the all purpose handbook of Islamic law, cites 9:29 as the basis of a requirement that the caliph makes war upon Jews & Christians.  [Emphasis & link added.]

O9.8: The Objectives of Jihad

The caliph fights all other peoples until they become Muslim (O: because they are not a people with a Book, nor honored as such, and are not permitted to settle with paying the poll tax (jizya) ) (n: though according to the Hanafi school, peoples of all other religions, even idol worshippers, are permitted to live under the protection of the Islamic state if they either become Muslim or agree to pay the poll tax, the sole exceptions to which are apostates from Islam and idol worshippers who are Arabs, neither of whom has any choice but becoming Muslim (al-Hidaya sharh Bidaya al-mubtadi’ (y21), 6.48-49) ).

The Caliph is required to fight all other people until they become Muslims (O9.9).  Al-Shafi’i issued a relevant ruling that there must be at least one annual military expedition against kuffar.

“The least that the imam must do is that he allow no year to pass without having organised a military expedition by himself, or by his raiding parties, according to the Muslims’ interest, so that the jihad will only be stopped in a year for a (reasonable) excuse.”

The Islamic religious duty to attack us is founded on those two ayat. It is confirmed by hadith and codified in Shari’ah; confirmed by fiqh.   Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and associates have exposed the fatal facts to our view by submitting them to the court. The facts can not be concealed any longer, they must be recognized and confronted.

In reality, K.S.M. etal. are not extremists; they have not hijacked Islam, they are believers, obeying Allah & emulating Moe.  Islam is a war cult, not a ‘religion of peace’.  If our elected leaders do not wise up to this fact and react accordingly, we will surely be subjected to further attacks, and eventually lose our legacy of liberty.

Swiss Minaret Ban: Big Deal


Regular readers of my blog posts know that I waste few opportunities to blast Islam with facts. They must be wondering why I have not written about the Nov. 29 referendum which banned new minarets in Switzerland.  There are two primary reasons. First, I am not entirely in agreement with the concept. Second, I wanted to let others write first so that I could take the role of clean up writer.

First and foremost, I am opposed to superficial, symbolic attacks which accomplish nothing beyond the counter productive stimulation of Islamic resentment.  Beards, burkas & hijabs  are symbolic, but they are not more important to the wearer as they are to us. Their value is more than symbolic, they are warning signs. Like a skunk’s stripes and a rattle snake’s noisy tail, they serve to alert us to the proximity of danger.

Second, I perceive the vote to be a temporary victory.  I have little doubt that the result will be overturned in the courts. The vote serves mainly as a signal of rising public awareness of Islam’s true nature and the existential threat it poses to Western Civilization.

My readers know that I will take on anyone, without fear or favor.  While other writings have been more deserving of criticism, My choice did a better job of clarifying some of the issues involved.  Dr. Sami Alrabaa wrote an exclusive for Family Security Matters:  Minarets are Symbols of Bigotry. I will quote some good parts, but you really should click the link and read the entire article because the quotes which follow are taken out of context. .

It is also true that huge lavish mosques funded by petrodollars are being constructed to prove that Islam is omnipresent everywhere and Islam – the best religion on earth! – is increasingly being accepted and practiced all over the world.

The huge mosques & soaring minarets are symbols of Islamic supremacism & domination.

Minaret construction is an exhibition of political power spearheaded by Islamists. These “towers” are simply aggressive symbols of fanatic defying power.

Minaret construction has nothing to do with freedom of religion. It is a symbol of bigotry.

If we allow the erection of minarets without offering resistance, our silent acquiescence is a token of surrender. The Swiss electorate decided not to surrender, but they stopped short of effective resistance. They attacked symbolism, not substance.

But when it comes to referendum, the majority in the Western world would also reject Islam as a stone-age “religion.” I am pretty sure that if the Swiss referendum were held in other European countries, the majority would also vote in favor of banning the construction of minarets. The European public is better informed than their self-appointed defenders of Islam.

I am not yet convinced that a majority are fully aware of the nature of Islam. But the Swiss vote may indicate a trend of increasing awareness.  Lapidation may be a stone age execution method, but Moe had weapons made of more advanced materials. 610 was hardly part of the stone age.

It is also true that the Swiss and the rest of the world are not against Muslims practicing their own religion in peace like all followers of other religions.

Islam can not be practiced in peace. Jihad is an intrinsic and inseverable part of Islam. Al-Anfal & At-Taubah are permanent parts of Islamic scripture. If we are not against the practice of Islam, then we are passively surrendering.

If, however, people around the globe, especially in the West, read the Koran and Hadith and realize how this religion incites to hatred and violence against non-Muslims, and discrimination against women, they would classify it as an extremist ideology, as politically incorrect and demand banning it like all extremist organizations. Nevertheless, the world community, including Switzerland, accepts Islam as a “religion” and allows its followers to practice it under the principle of religious freedom.

We accept Islam as a “religion” and allow its practice, but if we read Islam’s canon of scripture and tradition we would reject it. Will anyone get a clue from those vital paragraphs?

Before the West accepts Islam as a religion it must demand that Muslim states reform Islam; accept/apply universal human rights and religious freedom in their societies.

Preaching hatred and violence must be banned and their perpetrators must be punished. Additionally, the free civilized world must demand from Muslims and their religious institutions and states: Drop all those atrocious passages from your Koran and Hadith if you want to be part of the civilized world.

So Islam must be reformed; the violent passages must be removed from its canon of scripture & tradition. You forgot one, Dr. Alrabaa :  Shari’ah.  Islamic law reflects Islamic scripture & tradition.  How many of those texts exist in book stores and in libraries all over the world?  How many exist in computer hard disks and web pages?  How do you hope to edit all of them?  Who will edit all the copies of Ibn Kathir’s Tafsir and Riyad us-saliheen?

Allah tells us in 5:3 & 11:1 that Islam and its scripture are perfected. Perfection can only be defiled, not improved. Allah tells us in 6:115,  10:64 and  30:30 that the Koran and the  “religion” of which it is the foundation can not be changed. In Sahih Bukhari 9.78.174 Moe is on record cursing anyone who changes Islam after his death, saying that they will be far removed from mercy.  Abu Dawud 23.3455 has Moe saying that if Muslims abandon Jihad in favor of agriculture, “Allah will make disgrace prevail over you, and will not withdraw it until you return to your original religion.” [Emphasis added.]

Muslims who would reform Islam risk fatwa as apostates. Muslims Against Sharia is a prime example.  Their Koran revision leaves As-Saff 10-13 intact.  while Surah At-Taubah has been entirely excised. Surahs 8 & 47  lose context & continuity when the violent ayat are removed.

Perhaps you’d prefer to re-interpret the Koran. But the gates of ijtihad have been closed for 900 years. They are not about to spring open.  Who knows the interpretation better than the one who revealed it?  His Sunna & Sira show us what the Koran means.  What does this mean?

8:39. And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and polytheism: i.e. worshipping others besides Allâh) and the religion (worship) will all be for Allâh Alone [in the whole of the world ]. But if they cease (worshipping others besides Allâh), then certainly, Allâh is All-Seer of what they do.

Moe will tell you what it means!

Sahih Bukhari Volume 1, Book 8, Number 387:
Narrated Anas bin Malik:
Allah’s Apostle said, “I have been ordered to fight the people till they say: ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah.’ And if they say so, pray like our prayers, face our Qibla and slaughter as we slaughter, then their blood and property will be sacred to us and we will not interfere with them except legally and their reckoning will be with Allah.” Narrated Maimun ibn Siyah that he asked Anas bin Malik, “O Abu Hamza! What makes the life and property of a person sacred?” He replied, “Whoever says, ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah’, faces our Qibla during the prayers, prays like us and eats our slaughtered animal, then he is a Muslim, and has got the same rights and obligations as other Muslims have.”  [Emphasis added.]

Allah’s jihad  imperatives mean exactly what they say. They can not be edited, and if they were, they would eventually be restored.

Sunan Abu Dawud Book 37, Number 4278:

Narrated AbuHurayrah:

The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: Allah will raise for this community at the end of every hundred years the one who will renovate its religion for it.

The Swiss initiative is symbolic, with no effect beyond giving visibility to the rising tide of rejection of Islam. Islam is an intolerable predator which can not be reformed. That leaves Western Civilization  one alternative: Islam must be prohibited by law. Ban the substance, not its symbols.

Dr. Sami Alrabaa asserts that we would reject Islam and favor banning it if we understood it from reading the Koran & hadith.   You can test that hypothesis without slogging through thousands of pages of musty text. The ayat most relevant to Islamic aggression, the tafsir which explain them and the ahadith which confirm them are contained in EgregiousAyat.chm, along with the most important part of Shari’ah which codifies them into law.

The practical application of those texts is found in fiqh: rulings by Islamic jurists. FOMIJihad.chm‘s Jihad in Fiqh chapter presents a significant sample of relevant rulings.  For those who prefer the hard slog method, the Muslim Student Association at USC maintains a data base containing  three parallel translations of the Koran and four of the six canonical hadith collections.

Comparative vs Absolute Violence


Sheila Musaji responded to Condemning Religious Extremism with  a new article containing two rhetorical questions in its title.
Is Islam more violent than other religions?:  Is the Qur’an inherently violent?

Dajjal, the author, then lists verses in the Qur’an which he believes to mean that my condemnation would call for me to condemn God and/or the Qur’an, or Islam.  He goes on to repeat that “Islam not only encourages but mandates violence”.  He repeats this process for each of the condemnations in my article, giving his interpretation of particular Qur’anic verses to “prove” that his understanding of Islam is more accurate than that of the majority of Muslims (including Muslim scholars), and that any moderate interpretation is a lie.

Sheila Musaji follows up with a recapitulation of her earlier article  before listing several  verses which she finds inspirational, including: 2:190, 8:61, 5:28, 60:8, 2:1932:25618:2910:9924:54109:1-6, 3:134 and 3:186.

Some time ago I wrote an article entitled The Use and Abuse of Scriptures and I believe that it responds very clearly to the problem of “quote mining” the scriptures.

The cited article was reproduced after that introduction. It  lists Qur’an & Bible verses which are supposedly abused by cherry pickers.  This brings me back to the list of verses which inspire the author. Why does she find them inspirational?  She uses the translation by Abdullah Yusuf Ali. You can find it, with the translator’s commentary, at altafsir.com.  Lets examine the first verse she cited, linked at the end of the preceding  sentence

[2:190]
Fight in the cause of God those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for God loveth not transgressors.


* v.190 : War is only permissible in self-defence, and under well-defined limits. When undertaken, it must be pushed with vigour, but not relentlessly, but only to restore peace and freedom for the worship of God. In any case strict limits must not be transgressed: women, children, old and infirm men should not be molested, nor trees and crops cut down, nor peace withheld when the enemy comes to terms.

” War is only permissible in self-defense”  goes far beyond the text of the verse, if we interpret it literally. Is it true? “Those who fight you”  implies that this verse is about defensive warfare. But look closely, it says “who fight you”, not “who attack you”.  Lets turn to Ibn Kathir’s Tafsir.

Abu Al-`Aliyah said, “This was the first Ayah about fighting that was revealed in Al-Madinah. Ever since it was revealed, Allah’s Messenger used to fight only those who fought him and avoid non-combatants.

Women & children should not be killed. Why not? Is that ruling based on moral premises?  Examine Malik’s Muwatta 21.3.10, which contains several prohibitions.

  • Do not kill women or children or an aged, infirm person
  • Do not cut down fruit-bearing trees
  • Do not destroy an inhabited place.
  • Do not slaughter sheep or camels except for food.
  • Do not burn bees and do not scatter them.
  • Do not steal from the booty, and do not be cowardly

Notice that the first five prohibitions are all members of a set defined by the first clause in the last prohibition.  Everything protected by the prohibition  is booty! The  economic foundation of the prohibition is confirmed in Shari’ah. We turn next to Reliance of the Traveller. [Emphasis added.]

O9.13

When a child or a woman is taken captive, they become slaves by the fact of capture, and the woman’s previous marriage is immediately annulled.

Ok, so non-combatants are not to be attacked, just enslaved or held for ransom. What about people passively minding their own business, in their own homeland, who were not attacking Muslims? [Emphasis added.]

O9.1: The Obligatory Character of Jihad

Jihad is a communal obligation (def: c3.2).  When enough people perform it to successfully accomplish it, it is no longer obligatory upon others (O: the evidence for which is the Prophet’s saying (Allah bless him and give him peace),

“He who provides the equipment for a soldier in jihad has himself performed jihad,”

and Allah Most High having said:

“Those of the believers who are unhurt but sit behind are not equal to those who fight in Allah’s path with their property and lives. Allah has preferred those who fight with their property and lives a whole degree above those who sit behind. And to each, Allah has promised great good” (Koran 4:95).

If none of those concerned perform jihad, and it does not happen at all, then everyone who is aware that it is obligatory is guilty of sin, if there was a possibility of having performed it. In the time of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) jihad was a communal obligation after his emigration (hijra) to Medina. As for subsequent times, there are two possible states in respect to non-Muslims.

The first is when they are in their own countries, in which case jihad (def: o9.8) is a communal obligation, and this is what our author is speaking of when he says, “Jihad is a communal obligation,” meaning upon the Muslims each year.

The second state is when non-Muslims invade a Muslim country or near to one, in which case jihad is personally obligatory (def: c3.2) upon the inhabitants of that country, who must repel the non-Muslims with whatever they can).

Jihad against Kufar in their own countries is a communal obligation binding upon the Muslims each year.  Let Al-Shafi’i clarify the issue.

O9.8: The Objectives of Jihad

the time and place for which is before the final descent of Jesus (upon whom be peace).  After his final coming, nothing but Islam will be accepted from them, for taking the poll tax is only effective until Jesus’ descent (upon him and our Prophet be peace), which is the divinely revealed law of Muhammad. The coming of Jesus does not entail a separate divinely revealed law, for he will rule by the law of Muhammad. As for the Prophet’s saying (Allah bless him and give him peace),

“I am the last, there will be no prophet after me,”

this does not contradict the final coming of Jesus (upon whom be peace), since he will not rule according to the Evangel, but as a follower of our Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) ).

The  caliph invites people of the book to embrace Islam or submit to extortion. If they decline, he makes war on them.  “Fight those who fight against you:”  evidently means ‘after you attack them’. Why would Muslims attack people who had not attacked them?  Because Allah commanded it in 8:39 & 9:29. Moe  dispatched armies, giving their commanders orders which were recorded in Sahih Muslim 19.4294.

[…]If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from them the Jizya. If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off your hands. If they refuse to pay the tax, seek Allah’s help and fight them.[…]

There is another source of verification which Muslims would prefer that we not be aware of. I learned of this resource by lurking in a Muslim chat room on Pal Talk a few years ago. Moe dictated extortion letters and dispatched them by couriers, later following up with his army. He sent one to the Byzantine Emperor before launching the ghazwat on Tabuk. He sent another to the Jews at the Khaibar Oasis prior to attacking them.  But this exemplary gem of extortion letters is far more explicit than the others, leaving little  to the imagination.

LETTER TO THE CHIEFS OF AQABA

In the name of ALLAH the compassionate, the Merciful
From Muhammad, Prophet of Allah
To the People of Aqaba

May peace be on you. I praise Allah who is one and except whom there is nobody else to be worshipped.

I do not intend to wage war against you till you receive my written reason for it. It is better for you, either to accept Islam or agree to pay Jiziya and consent to remain obedient to Allah, His prophet and his messengers. My messengers deserve honour. Treat them with respect. Whatever pleases my messengers, will also please me.

These people have been informed of the orders about Jiziya. If you desire that there should be peace and security in the world, obey Allah and His Prophet. Thereafter none in Arabia and Ajam (Iran) shall dare cast an evil eye on you. But the rights of Allah and His Prophet can at no time be waived.

If you do not accept these terms and set them aside, I do not need your presents and gifts. In that case, I shall have to wage war (to establish peace and security). Its result would be that the big ones shall be killed in war and the commoners shall be taken prisoners.

I assure you that I am a true Prophet of Allah. I believe in Allah, and His Books, and His Prophets and am of the faith that Maseeh (Messiah) son of Mariam (Mary), is a Prophet of Allah and His word.

Hurmala (Raziallah AnhoA.) who brought to me 3 wasaq (about 6 quintals) of barley, recommended your case. Had it not been in compliance of the command of Allah and the good opinion of Hurmala for you, it would not have been necessary for me to correspond with you and instead of it, there would have been a war. If you will obey my messengers, you shall immediately have my support and the help and support of everyone who is attached to me.

My messengers are Shuraih-beel, Obaiy, Hurmala and Hurais (Raziallah AnhoA.) and whatever decision they take in respect of you, shall be acceptable to me.

Your people are under the protection and responsibility of Allah and His Prophet.

Supply provisions to the Jews of Maqna, for their journey to their country.

If you accept obedience, may peace be on you.’

Citing 8:39 & 9:29 might be cherry picking if their meanings were not so obvious, but they are clear verses, the foundations of the book. Furthermore, they are confirmed by Islamic oral tradition as well as by Shari’ah. [Emphasis added.]

Classical Arabic of the time of the revelation of the Qur’an lacked vowels and diacritical marks. It was not much more than a memory aid. One man was an expert in  the meaning of the Qur’an, the one who received and recited the revelation.  He told his companions what it meant and demonstrated its meaning.  His companions passed that information down from mouth to ear for generations before it was codified.  Because Islamic traditions were codified and translated, we have access to them and can see what the Qur’an meant to Moe, the real expert.

Many Muslims will answer by denying the authenticity of hadith, asserting that the Qur’an is the only revelation of divine will, protected by Allah from all contamination. Of course, there are some problems with that assertion. Only Moe received the revelations, sometimes in the form of a bell ringing in his head.
Moe could say anything, asserting that it was from Allah, and he did. His child bride was wise to him. [Emphasis added.]

Sahih Bukhari Volume 6, Book 60, Number 311:

Narrated Aisha:

I used to look down upon those ladies who had given themselves to Allah’s Apostle and I used to say, “Can a lady give herself (to a man)?” But when Allah revealed: “You (O Muhammad) can postpone (the turn of) whom you will of them (your wives), and you may receive any of them whom you will; and there is no blame on you if you invite one whose turn you have set aside (temporarily).’ (33.51) I said (to the Prophet), “I feel that your Lord hastens in fulfilling your wishes and desires.”

The Qur’an was largely transmitted from mouth to ear, just like the hadith. Fragments were written on various materials, but when the Qur’an was codified, parts of it were only available from hafiz.  If the hadith are not reliable, neither is the Qur’an.  How is a Muslim to obey Muhammad and emulate his conduct without knowing what he commanded and exemplified?  Does the Qur’an tell you how to perform Wudu? Does it tell you what to do if water is not available? So, how do you know?

What is Shari’ah based upon? It has two primary sources: Qur’an & hadith, extended by analogy.  If you disclaim hadith, then how can you claim that Shari’ah has any validity?

Muslims assert that 2:256 &  10:99, quoted by  Sheila Musaji, forbid compelling anyone to revert to Islam. There is a reason for that: Jizya was only collected from people of the book who had been conquered or intimidated.  If they were reverted, they would cease to pay Jizya.  Dhimmis were a source of Income for Moe.

2:256. There is no compulsion in religion. Verily, the Right Path has become distinct from the wrong path. Whoever disbelieves in Tâghût and believes in Allâh, then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that will never break. And Allâh is All-Hearer, All-Knower.

10:99. And had your Lord willed, those on earth would have believed, all of them together. So, will you (O Muhammad ) then compel mankind, until they become believers.

10:100. It is not for any person to believe, except by the Leave of Allâh, and He will put the wrath on those who are heedless.

It says you can’t force us to revert, it does not say you can’t attack us. Where is the conflict between those verses and the Jihad imperatives?

8:39. And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and polytheism: i.e. worshipping others besides Allâh) and the religion (worship) will all be for Allâh Alone [in the whole of the world ]. But if they cease (worshipping others besides Allâh), then certainly, Allâh is All-Seer of what they do.

9:29. Fight against those who (1) believe not in Allâh, (2) nor in the Last Day, (3) nor forbid that which has been forbidden by Allâh and His Messenger (4) and those who acknowledge not the religion of truth (i.e. Islâm) among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), until they pay the Jizyah with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.

“Religion will all be for Allah alone”, a terminal condition for warfare in 8:39, is obviously in conflict. But there is an out: abrogation.

2:106. Whatever a Verse (revelation) do We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, We bring a better one or similar to it. Know you not that Allâh is able to do all things?

Later revelations abrogate earlier revelations with which they conflict. Which came first? Surah Al-Baqarah was  #87 in sequence of revelation; Surah Al-Anfal was #88.  2:256 is abrogated.

Of course I don’t know a character of Arabic, so I am not qualified to interpret the Qur’an, as if Allah’s commandments required interpretation. Will you take the word of one who was qualified? Here is a fragment from the Wikipedia entry about Ibn Kathir.

Ibn Kathir wrote a famous commentary on the Qur’an named Tafsir ibn Kathir which linked certain Hadith, or sayings of Muhammad, and sayings of the sahaba to verses of the Qur’an, in explanation. Tafsir Ibn Kathir is famous all over the Muslim world and among Muslims in the Western world, is one of the most widely used explanations of the Qu’ran today.

Ibn Kathir was renowned for his great memory regarding the sayings of Muhammad and the entire Qur’an. Ibn Kathir is known as a qadi, a master scholar of history, and a mufassir (Qur’an commentator). Ibn Kathir saw himself as a Shafi’i scholar. This is indicated by two of his books, one of which was Tabaqaat ah-Shafai’ah, or The Categories of the Followers of Imam Shafi.

Did Jesus Christ preach or practice conquest, genocide & terrorism?  In what New Testament book, chapter & verse is such preaching or practice recorded?   The Qur’an hadith show us that Moe preached & practiced those evils. Condemning Religious Extremism


On November 15, 09, The American Muslim published Muslims Must Condemn Religious Extremists by Sheila Musaji.  She expressed a desire to “go on record as condemning all religious extremism, bigotry, violence, hatred, and terrorism by both Muslims and non-Muslims.”  [Bold face in original.]  She follows up by citing several “false claims” about Islam and sets out to disprove them by listing evil acts and obnoxious statements performed or made by  Jews or Christians.

In the process of listing the relatively small number of evil acts & statements, Sheila Musaji tacks around the unpleasant & incontrovertible fact that  terrorism is an intrinsic sacrament of Islam. Extraordinary claims require proof, don”t they?  I submit as proof, the ample testimony of Allah and his messenger.

The testimony of Allah as recorded in the Qur’an. [Emphasis added.]

  • 3:151. We shall cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve, because they joined others in worship with Allâh, for which He had sent no authority; their abode will be the Fire and how evil is the abode of the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong­doers).
  • 8:12. (Remember) when your Lord inspired the angels, “Verily, I am with you, so keep firm those who have believed. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who have disbelieved, so strike them over the necks, and smite over all their fingers and toes.”
  • 8:57. So if you gain the mastery over them in war, punish them severely in order to disperse those who are behind them, so that they may learn a lesson.
  • 8:60. Against them make ready your strength to the utmost of your power, including steeds of war, to strike terror into (the hearts of) the enemies, of God and your enemies, and others besides, whom ye may not know, but whom God doth know. Whatever ye shall spend in the cause of God, shall be repaid unto you, and ye shall not be treated unjustly. [Abdullah Yusuf Ali; compare with

  • 33:26. And those of the people of the Scripture who backed them (the disbelievers) Allâh brought them down from their forts and cast terror into their hearts, (so that) a group (of them) you killed, and a group (of them) you made captives.
  • 59:2.He it is Who drove out the disbelievers among the people of the Scripture (i.e. the Jews of the tribe of Bani An-Nadir) from their homes at the first gathering. You did not think that they would get out. And they thought that their fortresses would defend them from Allah! But Allah’s (Torment) reached them from a place whereof they expected it not, and He cast terror into their hearts, so that they destroyed their own dwellings with their own hands and the hands of the believers. Then take admonition, O you with eyes (to see).
  • 59:13. Verily, you (believers in the Oneness of Allah – Islamic Monotheism) are more awful as a fear in their (Jews of Bani An-Nadir) breasts than Allah. That is because they are a people who comprehend not (the Majesty and Power of Allah).

  • Sahih Bukhari 1.7.331 Allah made me victorious by awe, (by His frightening my enemies) for a distance of one month’s journey. […]
  • Sahih Bukhari 4.52.220 […]I have been made victorious with terror (cast in the hearts of the enemy) […]

A counter at Religion of Peace indicates that Muslims have perpetrated 14,392 terror attacks since 09/11/’01.  How many have Jews & Christians perpetrated in the last eight years?  Besides lists of recent and prior year attacks, that web site lists these  facts which help to put things in perspective..

  • More people are killed by Islamists each year than in all 350 years of the Spanish Inquisition combined. (source)
  • Islamic terrorists murder more people every day than the Ku Klux Klan has in the last 50 years. (source)
  • More civilians were killed by Muslim extremists in two hours on September 11th than in the 36 years of sectarian conflict in Northern Ireland. (source)
  • 19 Muslim hijackers killed more innocents in two hours on September 11th than the number of American criminals executed in the last 65 years. (source)

Sheila Musaji lists several ayat which guide her understanding of the Qur’an. Her list includes Al-Ma’idah 32 and skips directly to  Surah Ghafir 40-43.

“If anyone slays a person – unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land – it would be as if he slew all people.  And if anyone saves a life, it would be as if he saved the life of all people.” Qur’an 5:32.

“The recompense for an injury is an injury equal thereto (in degree), but if a person forgives and makes reconciliation, his reward is due from God, for God loves not those who do wrong.  But indeed, if any do help and defend themselves after a wrong done to them, against such there is no cause of blame.  The blame is only against those who oppress men with wrongdoing and insolently transgress beyond bounds through the land, defying right and justice. For such there will be a penalty grievous (in the Hereafter).  But indeed, if any show patience and forgive, that would truly be an affair of great resolution.” Qur’an 42:40-43.

Why did she skip the context of 5:33 and turn so far away to complete the concept?  For the same reason that other Muslims skip over  that ayeh

:  kitman. They don’t want you to know its contents or its meaning.  Lets take a close look at what they conceal from you. [Emphasis added.]

  • 5:33. The recompense of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and do mischief in the land is only that they shall be killed or crucified or their hands and their feet be cut off on the opposite sides, or be exiled from the land. That is their disgrace in this world, and a great torment is theirs in the Hereafter.

What is the meaning of “wage war against Allah“, which subjects one to the listed hudud?  Ibn Kathir answers the question in his tafsir of 5:33.

If you do not believe in Allah, you are waging war against him and are subject to the listed hudud.

Sheila Musaji lists some actions and attitudes which she condemns. I will sample them out of context.

I condemn any individual who encourages others to commit violence, murder, or terrorism.

Does she condemn Allah & Moe?  Qur’anic incitement to terrorism is listed above. Quranic incitement to violence include: 2:216, 8:39, 9:29 & 9:123.

I condemn any organization which encourages extremism, bigotry, or violence

Does she condemn Islam, which not only encourages but mandates violence?

I condemn anyone who attempts to degrade or insult the religion of others!

Does she condemn Allah? 1:7 says that Jews earned Allah’s wrath and Christians went astray,   3:85 expresses intolerance, 8:22 expresses contempt for Jews & Christians and 9:33 curses us.

I condemn anyone who thinks that collective punishment, group responsibility, ethnic cleansing, or genocide is the solution to anything!

Does she condemn Allah?   9:14 & 3:12 involve collective punishment, 8:67 & 47:4 sanctify genocide.

I condemn anyone who thinks that membership in their faith group makes them superior to other human beings

Does she condemn Allah, who said that Muslims are the best of peoples in 3:110 and Moe who explained in Sahih Bukhari 6.60.80 that it means “the best of peoples for the people, as you bring them with chains on their necks till they embrace Islam.”?

Islamic Deception: Cherry Picking


Omar Sley, of Egypt posted a lengthy comment on the International Qur’an Petition. I have dissected the comment into its main points for the sake of legibility and to facilitate my responses.

  • Islam = Peace and hormony [sic]

The literal meaning of Islam is submission. Submit to Allah and to us or we will attack you. This fact becomes clear when we read the extortion letters which Moe dictated to scribes and dispatched by private courier. Read his letter to the Chiefs of Aqaba, from which the following quote is taken.

I do not intend to wage war against you till you receive my written reason for it. It is better for you, either to accept Islam or agree to pay Jiziya and consent to remain obedient to Allah, His prophet and his messengers..

  • “…..if any one slew a person – unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land – it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people”

The quote is from 5:32, which Muslims love to quote. Why don’t they continue the context by quoting  5:33, which prescribes hudud for “waging war against Allah” ?

The recompense of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and do mischief in the land is only that they shall be killed or crucified or their hands and their feet be cut off on the opposite sides, or be exiled from the land. …

What is the meaning of “wage war against Allah”?  Ibn Kathir’s Tafsir answers this question ” …`Wage war’ mentioned here means, oppose and contradict, and it includes disbelief, blocking roads and spreading fear in the fairways…”.   If you don’t believe in Allah, Muslims are free to kill or mutilate you because you are waging war against Allah.

  • Nor can goodness and Evil be equal. Repel (Evil) with what is better: Then will he between whom and thee was hatred become as it were thy friend and intimate! “

The quote is from 41:34.  Omar wants us to assume that Islam operates by gentle persuasion, like Christianity. Nothing could be further from the truth, as proved by the extortion letter quoted above.

  • Prophet Muhammad(pbuh) said : “Kindness is a mark of faith, and whoever is not kind has no faith.”

This diversion from Islamic violence is likely to succeed because most non-Muslims are unaware of Islamic duality. Islamic mercy, kindness & charity are for Muslims only.

  • The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said : “One who kills a non-Muslim person under protection (Arabic: dhimmi) will not even smell the fragrance of Paradise.”

Those “under protection” were either conquered  or intimidated by Moe’s extortion letters. They lived a sub-human existence of humiliation and extortionate taxation, deprived of  civil rights.  If you are not living under Muslim rule, you are not protected, you are subject to open season.

  • ” Allah forbids you not, with regard to those who fight you not for (your) Faith nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them: for Allah loveth those who are just.” 60:8

Keep reading,  five more ayat to the contradiction..

60:13. O you who believe! Take not as friends the people who incurred the Wrath of Allâh (i.e. the Jews). Surely, they have been in despair to receive any good in the Hereafter, just as the disbelievers have been in despair about those (buried) in graves (that they will not be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection).

  • Even during war he was teaching us to be civilized and merciful to the innocents : Muhammad, pbuh, has set a very well defined path for warriors to follow. During the sending off the Muslim army to a battle, the prophet issued the following ‘battle field code of conduct’: “You shall not break a promise you make, you shall not mutilate the dead”, and “You shall not kill an elder, a child or a woman”. He gave clear instructions not to kill the injured and unarmed enemy members (equivalent to army civilians, and non-combat support troops in modern times).

The rules of warfare were laid out in Sahih Muslim 19.4294. Omar wants us to assume that the proscription on killing women and children is moral. In fact, the proscription is economic, because the women and children are enslaved, they are property for Muslims; part of the booty.  Ibn Kathir’s Tafsir of 33:27 hints at this. “…(a group you killed, and a group you made captives.) Those who were killed were their warriors, and the prisoners were their children and women….”

Two provisions of Islamic law are crucial to comprehending the deception involved in Omar’s cherry picking. These are from Reliance of The Traveller.[Emphasis added.]

O9.12

Whoever enters Islam before being captured may not be killed or his property confiscated, or his young children taken captive.

O9.13

When a child or a woman is taken captive, they become slaves by the fact of capture, and the woman’s previous marriage is immediately annulled.

It was asserted that Moe was civilized and merciful to the innocents. Give a close and careful examination to the following hadith to discover the falsity of that assertion.

Sunan Abu Dawud Book 38, Number 4390:
Narrated Atiyyah al-Qurazi:
I was among the captives of Banu Qurayzah. They (the Companions) examined us, and those who had begun to grow hair (pubes) were killed, and those who had not were not killed. I was among those who had not grown hair.

Islam = Jihad??


This post continues a critical examination of the assertions expressed in and implied by these statements from the current and proposed resolutions combating defamation of religions.

Also expresses deep concern at attempts to identify Islam with terrorism, violence and human rights violations and emphasizes that equating any religion with terrorism should be rejected and combated by all at all levels;

Expresses deep concern in this respect that Islam is frequently and wrongly associated with human rights violations and terrorism

Is Islam wrongly associated with violence? A critical examination of Islam’s canon of scripture, tradition & jurisprudence will provide the answer.  The word associated with this  question is Jihad.  What is the meaning of Jihad and what is its importance?  Turning to 2:216 ,  we find the definition.

216. Jihâd [1] (holy fighting in Allâh’s cause) is ordained for you (Muslims) though you dislike it, and it may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you and that you like a thing which is bad for you. Allâh knows but you do not know.

The parenthetical expression is editorial, not Allah’s word. We need to discover what differentiates holy fighting from secular fighting and we need to define Allah’s cause. Lets follow the footnote.

[1] (V.2:190) Al-Jihâd (holy fighting) in Allâh’s Cause (with full force of numbers and weaponry) is given the utmost importance in Islâm and is one of its pillar (on which it stands). By Jihâd Islâm is established, Allâh’s Word is made superior, (His Word being Lâ ilaha illallâh which means none has the right to be worshipped but Allâh), and His Religion (Islâm) is propagated. By abandoning Jihâd (may Allâh protect us from that) Islâm is destroyed and the Muslims fall into an inferior position; their honour is lost, their lands are stolen, their rule and authority vanish. Jihâd is an obligatory duty in Islâm on every Muslim, and he who tries to escape from this duty, or does not in his innermost heart wish to fulfil this duty, dies with one of the qualities of a hypocrite.
Narrated ‘Abdullâh bin Mas‘ûd رضي الله عنه: I asked Allâh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم “O Allâh’s Messenger! What is the best deed?” He replied, “To offer the Salât (prayers) at their early fixed stated times.” I asked, “What is next in goodness?” He replied, “To be good and dutiful to your parents.” I further asked, “What is next in goodness?” He replied, “To participate in Jihâd in Allâh’s Cause.” I did not ask Allâh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم anymore and if I had asked him more, he would have told me more. (Sahih Al-Bukhâri, Vol.4, Hadîth No.41).

Contrary to the footnote, Jihad is not generally recognized as one of the pillars or Islam. We learn that it is:

  • physical fighting
  • of  utmost importance
  • establishing Islam
  • making Allah’s word superior
  • propagating Islam.

We also learn that abandoning Jihad has consequences:

  • Islam is destroyed
  • inferiority
  • dishonor
  • loss of
    • land
    • authority
    • rule.

Lets look to Umdat as-Salik for confirmation.

O9.0: Jihad (O: Jihad means to war against non-Muslims, and is etymologically derived from the word mujahada signifying warfare to establish the religion. And it is the lesser jihad. As for the greater jihad, it is spiritual warfare against the lower self (nafs), which is why the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said as he was returning from jihad.

Islamic law confirms the definition of Jihad as physical warfare to establish Islam.  We still lack  a firm fix on Allah’s cause. Perhaps the hadith will provide an answer.

Sahih Bukhari Volume 4, Book 52, Number 65:

Narrated Abu Musa:

A man came to the Prophet and asked, “A man fights for war booty; another fights for fame and a third fights for showing off; which of them fights in Allah’s Cause?” The Prophet said, “He who fights that Allah’s Word (i.e. Islam) should be superior, fights in Allah’s Cause.”

Now we know that Allah’s cause is making Islam superior.

The argument over lesser/greater Jihad is a distraction which should be eliminated. How great is the risk of being injured or killed in Jihad an-Nafs?

4:74. …whoso fights in the Cause of Allâh, and is killed or gets victory, We shall bestow on him a great reward….

What differentiates holy from secular war? Sahih Muslim 19.4294 includes this clue.

…Make a holy war, do not embezzle the spoils; do not break your pledge; and do not mutilate (the dead) bodies; do not kill the children….

Moe took the top 20% of the spoils, which explains the first element in the list. The pledge of loyalty to Moe involved not fleeing from battle. Mutilating corpses was a social taboo in Arabia and killing children would amount to wasting the spoils because captured children were enslaved.
A search (http://www.quranbrowser.com) of the Hilali & Khan translation finds 369 instances of fight and 22 instances of Jihad. Noel Yatom  published a list of 164 violent verses.  The bottom line is this: Allah issued timeless and unlimited enjunctions to make war upon pagans and  Jews & Christians. Moe is quoted confirming those imperatives in Sahih Bukhari 1.8.387.   Riyad us-Salaheen Book 11, Chapter 234 contains many of the hadith which prove the status & significance of Jihad. Sahih Bukhari: Jihad, Khumus & Expedition reveal much of what Muhammad said and did concerning Jihad.

The following listed titles from Ibn Kathir’s Tafsir display the ayat & ahadith which mandate conquest and promise victory.  Each of them is linked to the corresponding page at http://www.tafsir.com. Those tafsir establish, beyond doubt, Islam’s intrinsic violence & triumphalism.

Shari’ah, codified in Umdat as-Salik, clearly confirms the Jihad enjunctions and establishes the minimum requirement for their performance. O9.1: The Obligatory Character of Jihad
…If none of those concerned perform jihad, and it does not happen at all, then everyone who is aware that it is obligatory is guilty of sin, if there was a possibility of having performed it. In the time of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) jihad was a communal obligation after his emigration (hijra) to Medina. As for subsequent times, there are two possible states in respect to non-Muslims.

The first is when they are in their own countries, in which case jihad (def: o9.8) is a communal obligation, and this is what our author is speaking of when he says, “Jihad is a communal obligation,” meaning upon the Muslims each year….

O9.8: The Objectives of Jihad

The caliph (o25) makes war upon Jews, Christians, and Zoroastrians (N: provided he has first invited them to enter Islam in faith and practice, and if they will not, then invited them to enter the social order of Islam by paying the non-Muslim poll tax (jizya, def: o11.4) -which is the significance of their paying it, not the money itself-while remaining in their ancestral religions) (O: and the war continues) until they become Muslim or else pay the non-Muslim poll tax (O: in accordance with the word of Allah Most High,…

O25.9 …

-8- and if the area has a border adjacent to enemy lands, an eighth duty arises, namely to undertake jihad against enemies, dividing the spoils of battle among combatants, and setting aside fifth (def: o10.3) for deserving recipients.

Even this brief examination of Islam’s canon of scripture, tradition & jurisprudence proves that the association of Islam & violence is well  founded.
