Ahmadiyya: Peaceful Islam; Fact or Fiction?

The main object of this Movement is to present the true, original message of Islam to the whole world — Islam as it is found in the Holy Quran and the life of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), obscured today by grave misconceptions and wrong popular notions.

Islam seeks to attract the hearts and minds of people towards the truth, by means of reasoning, good moral example, and the natural beauty of its principles. It neither aspires to gain political power, nor allows the use of force in support of the faith.

How will we know Islam as found in the Qur’an without reading it? How will we know the Profit’s life without reading his Sira & Sunnah? The quotation contains one egregious lie which I am compelled to expose to the world.

  • It neither aspires to gain political power, nor allows the use of force in support of the faith.
    • Islam does not aspire to temporal power.
    • Islam does not allow the use of force in support of the faith.

Islam aspires to gain political power: total world domination. I do not ask you to take my word for this fact, I have sufficient evidence to prove it. I quote from The Noble Qur’an, translated by Hilali & Khan. I link to ten parallel translations at http://www.quranbrowser.com. Tafsir references are to Ibn Kathir.

  • 13:41. See they not that We gradually reduce the land (of disbelievers, by giving it to the believers, in war victories) from its outlying borders. And Allâh judges, there is none to put back His Judgment and He is Swift at reckoning.
  • 21:44. Nay, We gave the luxuries of this life to these men and their fathers until the period grew long for them. See they not that We gradually reduce the land (in their control) from its outlying borders? Is it then they who will overcome.
  • 24:55. Allâh has promised those among you who believe, and do righteous good deeds, that He will certainly grant them succession to (the present rulers) in the earth, as He granted it to those before them, and that He will grant them the authority to practise their religion, that which He has chosen for them (i.e. Islâm). And He will surely give them in exchange a safe security after their fear (provided) they (believers) worship Me and do not associate anything (in worship) with Me. But whoever disbelieved after this, they are the Fâsiqûn (rebellious, disobedient to Allâh).
    • This is a promise from Allah to His Messenger that He would cause his Ummah to become successors on earth, i.e., they would become the leaders and rulers of mankind, through whom He would reform the world and to whom people would submit, so that they would have in exchange a safe security after their fear. This is what Allah did indeed do, may He be glorified and exalted, and to Him be praise and blessings. For He did not cause His Messenger to die until He had given him victory over Makkah, Khaybar, Bahrayn, all of the Arabian Peninsula and Yemen; and he took Jizyah from the Zoroastrians of Hajar and from some of the border lands of Syria; and he exchanged gifts with Heraclius the ruler of Byzantium, the ruler of Egypt and Alexandria, the Muqawqis, the kings of Oman and An-Najashi of Abyssinia, who had become king after Ashamah, may Allah have mercy on him and grant him honor….   • 9:33. It is He Who has sent His Messenger (Muhammad) with guidance and the religion of truth (Islâm), to make it superior over all religions even though the Mushrikûn (polytheists, pagans, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allâh) hate (it).

Allah commands Muslims to fight pagans until only Allah is worshiped. He commands them to fight people with scriptural religions until they are subjugated and make annual extortion payments.

  • 8:39. And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and polytheism: i.e. worshipping others besides Allâh) and the religion (worship) will all be for Allâh Alone [in the whole of the world ]. But if they cease (worshipping others besides Allâh), then certainly, Allâh is All-Seer of what they do.
  • 9:29. Fight against those who (1) believe not in Allâh, (2) nor in the Last Day, (3) nor forbid that which has been forbidden by Allâh and His Messenger (4) and those who acknowledge not the religion of truth (i.e. Islâm) among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), until they pay the Jizyah with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.

Only Allah has the right to be worshiped.

  • 2:255. Allâh! Lâ ilâha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists. Neither slumber, nor sleep overtake Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on earth. Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His Permission? He knows what happens to them (His creatures) in this world, and what will happen to them in the Hereafter . And they will never compass anything of His Knowledge except that which He wills. His Kursî extends over the heavens and the earth, and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them. And He is the Most High, the Most Great. [This Verse 2:255 is called Ayat-ul-Kursî.]
  • 23:116. So Exalted be Allâh, the True King, Lâ ilâha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the Lord of the Supreme Throne!

By this we learn that Allah is supreme, he rules the world. If any doubt remains after 24:55, then examine this crystal clear gem of exposure.

Clearly, the assertion that Islam seeks no temporal power is absolutely false, by the ample testimony of Allah and his Messenger!

Islam not only allows, but mandates offensive violence in obtaining temporal power. I do not ask you to take my word for this, I have ample evidence in Islam’s canon of scripture, tradition, jurisprudence & exegeses.

Jihad is mandated by Surah Al-Baqarah 216.

  • 2:216. Jihâd (holy fighting in Allâh’s Cause) is ordained for you (Muslims) though you dislike it, and it may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you and that you like a thing which is bad for you. Allâh knows but you do not know.
    • In this Ayah, Allah made it obligatory for the Muslims to fight in Jihad against the evil of the enemy who transgress against Islam. Az-Zuhri said, “Jihad is required from every person, whether he actually joins the fighting or remains behind. Whoever remains behind is required to give support, if support is warranted; to provide aid, if aid is needed; and to march forth, if he is commanded to do so. If he is not needed, then he remains behind.”… Jihad is made Obligatory

Caution is required in reading that tafsir. this clause the evil of the enemy who transgress against Islam might seem to indicate that the mandate is strictly defensive. Transgression against Isnam is not so narrowly defined. I direct your attention to the Tafsir of 5:33.

  • (The recompense of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and do mischief in the land is only that they shall be killed or crucified or their hands and their feet be cut off on the opposite sides, or be exiled from the land.) `Wage war‘ mentioned here means, oppose and contradict, and it includes disbelief, blocking roads and spreading fear in the fairways…. The Punishment of those Who Cause Mischief in the Land

Disbelief in Allah is sufficient to subject you to the listed hudud. It is also sufficient to make you a victim of offensive warfare. The primary Jihad imperatives are contained in Al-Anfal 39 and At-Taubah 29 which are quoted above. Al Anfal 60 commands Muslims to maintain strength and preparation for war. Hilali & Khan go slightly overboard in contemporizing in their parenthetic commentary.

  • 8:60. And make ready against them all you can of power, including steeds of war (tanks, planes, missiles, artillery, etc.) to threaten the enemy of Allah and your enemy, and others besides whom, you may not know but whom Allah does know. And whatever you shall spend in the Cause of Allah shall be repaid unto you, and you shall not be treated unjustly.

At-Taubah 123 confirms the earlier imperatives.

  • 9:123. O you who believe! Fight those of the disbelievers who are close to you, and let them find harshness in you, and know that Allâh is with those who are the Al-Muttaqûn (the pious – see V.2:2).

Those imperatives are not anachronistic. Jihad will be performed continuously from the beginning of Moe’s mission to Judgment Day. Jihad is the Muslim’s ‘original religion’; they will be cursed if they abandon it.

  • Abu Dawud Book 14, Number 2526Narrated Anas ibn Malik:

    The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: Three things are the roots of faith: to refrain from (killing) a person who utters, “There is no god but Allah” and not to declare him unbeliever whatever sin he commits, and not to excommunicate him from Islam for his any action; and jihad will be performed continuously since the day Allah sent me as a prophet until the day the last member of my community will fight with the Dajjal (Antichrist). The tyranny of any tyrant and the justice of any just (ruler) will not invalidate it. One must have faith in Divine decree.

  • Abu Dawud Book 23, Number 3455:

    Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar:

    I heard the Apostle of Allah, (peace_be_upon_him) say: When you enter into the inah transaction, hold the tails of oxen, are pleased with agriculture, and give up conducting jihad (struggle in the way of Allah). Allah will make disgrace prevail over you, and will not withdraw it until you return to your original religion.

Shari’ah, Islam’s canon of jurisprudence, is based primarily on the Qur’an & hadith. Umdat as-Salik contains some vital information which confirms what I have revealed to you. I quote from Umdat as-Salik. Book O, Chapter 9.

O9.1: The Obligatory Character of Jihad

Jihad is a communal obligation (def: c3.2). When enough people perform it to successfully accomplish it, it is no longer obligatory upon others (O: the evidence for which is the Prophet’s saying (Allah bless him and give him peace),

“He who provides the equipment for a soldier in jihad has himself performed jihad,”

and Allah Most High having said:

“Those of the believers who are unhurt but sit behind are not equal to those who fight in Allah’s path with their property and lives. Allah has preferred those who fight with their property and lives a whole degree above those who sit behind. And to each, Allah has promised great good” (Koran 4:95).

If none of those concerned perform jihad, and it does not happen at all, then everyone who is aware that it is obligatory is guilty of sin, if there was a possibility of having performed it. In the time of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) jihad was a communal obligation after his emigration (hijra) to Medina. As for subsequent times, there are two possible states in respect to non-Muslims.

The first is when they are in their own countries, in which case jihad (def: o9.8) is a communal obligation, and this is what our author is speaking of when he says, “Jihad is a communal obligation,” meaning upon the Muslims each year.

The second state is when non-Muslims invade a Muslim country or near to one, in which case jihad is personally obligatory (def: c3.2) upon the inhabitants of that country, who must repel the non-Muslims with whatever they can).

O9.8: The Objectives of Jihad

The caliph (o25) makes war upon Jews, Christians, and Zoroastrians (N: provided he has first invited them to enter Islam in faith and practice, and if they will not, then invited them to enter the social order of Islam by paying the non-Muslim poll tax (jizya, def: o11.4) -which is the significance of their paying it, not the money itself-while remaining in their ancestral religions) (O: and the war continues) until they become Muslim or else pay the non-Muslim poll tax (O: in accordance with the word of Allah Most High,

“Fight those who do not believe in Allah and the Last Day and who forbid not what Allah and His messenger have forbidden-who do not practice the religion of truth, being of those who have been given the Book-until they pay the poll tax out of hand and are humbled” (Koran 9.29),…

. Take note of the last highlighted phrase in O9.1: meaning upon the Muslims each year. What does it mean? Could it possibly mean that offensive Jihad against Kuffar must be performed at least once each year until Dar al-Harb is entirely conquered? Al-Shaffi’i & Al-Ghazali agree on this essential matter of Shari’ah.

Al-Shafi’i (God have mercy on him) said: “The least that the imam must do is that he allow no year to pass without having organised a military expedition by himself, or by his raiding parties, according to the Muslims’ interest, so that the jihad will only be stopped in a year for a (reasonable) excuse.” He said: “If he did not undertake the sending of enough troops to fight, those who are absent (must) go out, and consider as an obligation that which God (who is praised) said.” I said: “What I have mentioned showed that if a group was needed to carry out an expedition, [f. 175 a] our duty was incumbent on all of them.

Below is what Al-Ghazali actually wrote about jihad war, and the treatment of the vanquished non-Muslim dhimmi peoples (from the Wagjiz, written in 1101 A.D.): …one must go on jihad (i.e., warlike razzias or raids) at least once a year…one may use a catapult against them [non-Muslims] when they are in a fortress, even if among them are women and children. One may set fire to them and/or drown them…If a person of the Ahl al-Kitab [People of The Book – Jews and Christians, typically] is enslaved, his marriage is [automatically] revoked…One may cut down their trees…One must destroy their useless books. Jihadists may take as booty whatever they decide…they may steal as much food as they need…

What’s Wrong With Islam/Muslims?


[This blog post has received 4537 views since it was published four years ago.
Since then, links have been broken by web site changes and new
resources have been found.  This post was therefore supplanted by
a new page, but it continues to get the hits while
the new page does not.  I have therefore updated this post,
repairing broken links and adding a few, notably to Ibn Sad’s Sira and
The Sealed Nectar to make more detailed information available to the
reader.  ]

Mercenary Mission

Islam was contrived for the purpose of its founder’s
personal emolument & empowerment through accrual of spoils &
dominion through perpetual war.  Three ayat in Surah Al-Anfal make
this matter crystal clear.  Four ahadith confirm it beyond all
doubt. [Emphasis added for clarity.]

8:1. They ask you (O Muhammad ) about the spoils
of war. Say: “The
spoils are for Allâh and the Messenger
.”
So fear Allâh and adjust all matters of difference among you, and obey
Allâh and His Messenger (Muhammad ), if you are believers.

The spoils are for Allah and Moe; how many stolen
sheep, camels & dates can an impotent stone idol eat?  How
many captured women can it rape?

8:41. And know that whatever of war-booty
that you may gain, verily one-fifth (1/5th) of it is assigned to Allâh,
and to the Messenger
,
and to the near relatives [of the Messenger (Muhammad )], (and also)
the orphans, Al-Masâkin (the poor) and the wayfarer, if you have
believed in Allâh and in that which We sent down to Our slave (Muhammad
) on the Day of criterion (between right and wrong), the Day when the
two forces met (the battle of Badr) – And Allâh is Able to do all
things.

 

8:67. It is not for a Prophet that he should have
prisoners of war (and free them with ransom) until he had made
a great slaughter
(among his enemies) in the land. You
desire the good of this world

(i.e. the money of ransom for freeing the captives), but Allâh desires
(for you) the Hereafter. And Allâh is All-Mighty, All-Wise.

Allah wants genocide: “great slaughter”, Moe wants ransom money.
One ahadith omitted from Khan’s translation of Sahih Bukhari speaks
volumes about Moe’s arrogance & avarice, I quote from Aisha
Bewley’s translation.

Bukhari  Ch 61 # 2756: …It
is mentioned from Ibn ‘Umar from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and
grant him peace, “My
provision has been placed under the shadow of my spear
, and abasement and humility
have been placed on the one who disobeys my comman
d.

Moe got his income with his spear: by raiding camel caravans and Jewish
settlements. Later we will see Moe’s ‘command’ and the threat he made
in conjunction with it.   Allah gave Moe a special privilege
not given to anyone else: accrual of spoils.

3. The booty has been
made Halal (lawful) for me yet it was not lawful for anyone else before
me.
[Sahih Bukhari 1.7.331]

 

Sahih Muslim Book
019, Number 4327
:

The spoils of
war were not made lawful for any people before us, This is because
Allah saw our weakness and humility and made them lawful for us
.

Allah was very generous: he gave Moe the keys to the
treasures of the world and he made Moe wealthy through conquests.

Sahih Bukhari Volume 4, Book 52, Number 220:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah’s Apostle said, “I have been sent with the
shortest expressions bearing the widest meanings, and I have been made victorious with terror
(cast in the hearts of the enemy), and while I was sleeping,
the keys of the treasures of the world were brought to me and put in my
hand
.
” Abu Huraira added: Allah’s Apostle has left the
world and now you, people, are bringing out those treasures (i.e. the
Prophet did not benefit by them).

Sahih Bukhari Volume 3, Book 37, Number 495:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Whenever a dead man in debt was brought to Allah’s
Apostle he would ask, “Has he left anything to repay his debt?” If he
was informed that he had left something to repay his debts, he would
offer his funeral prayer, otherwise he would tell the Muslims to offer
their friend’s funeral prayer. When
Allah made the Prophet wealthy through conquests
, he said, “I am
more rightful than other believers to be the guardian of the believers,
so if a Muslim dies while in debt, I am responsible for the repayment
of his debt, and whoever leaves wealth (after his death) it will belong
to his heirs. ”

Violence

Islam
is aggressively violent, by
design; irreparably. I quote Islamic law.

As for subsequent
times, there are two possible states in respect to non-Muslims.
The
first is when they are in their own countries, in which case jihad
(def: o9.8) is a communal obligation, and this is what our author is
speaking of when he says, “Jihad is a communal obligation,” meaning
upon the Muslims each year

1779 and 1815, the Barbary pirates were attacking America’s
merchant marine, seizing boats, enslaving their crews and stealing
cargo. They demanded payment of tribute for safe passage.

1786 Jefferson and John Adams went to negotiate with Tripoli’s envoy to
London, Ambassador Sidi Haji Abdrahaman or (Sidi Haji Abdul Rahman
Adja). They asked him by
what right he extorted money and took slaves
. Jefferson
reported to Secretary of State John Jay, and to the Congress:

The
ambassador answered us that
[the right] was founded on the Laws of the Prophet (Mohammed), that it
was written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have
answered their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty
to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves
of all they could take as prisoners, and that every Mussulman (or
Muslim) who should be slain in battle was sure to go to heaven
.

Allah
said:

8:39And fight

Muhammad
said:

“I
have been ordered to fight the people till they say: ‘None has the
right to be worshipped but Allah.’ And if they say so, pray like our
prayers, face our Qibla and slaughter as we slaughter, then their blood
and property will be sacred to us and we will not interfere with them
except legally and their reckoning will be with Allah.

Caliph
Umar’s general told the Persians:

…Our Prophet, the Messenger of our Lord, has ordered
us to fight you till you worship Allah Alone or give Jizya
 (i.e. tribute); and our
Prophet has informed us that our Lord says:– “Whoever
amongst us is killed (i.e. martyred), shall go to Paradise to lead such
a luxurious life as he has never seen, and whoever amongst us remain
alive, shall become your master
.”

Terrorism

Allah said that he would cast terror & did cast
terror. Allah commanded Moe to treat victims harshly so as to terrorize
other prospective victims and build up military strength to threaten
and terrify them.  Allah said that the local Jews were more afraid
of Moe and his army than of himself. Moe said that he was made victorious with terror.
Allah, ever generous to his slaves, guarantees them extra credit
towards an upgrade in his Celestial Bordello for any step taken to injure or
enrage us.

Objections:

What’s
Wrong With Muslims?

If
they believe and are faithful, they obey Allah’s commands by joining
the Jihad, striving hard with their lives and their wealth. If not
called to fight, they support Jihad with Zakat. How did the Holy Land
Foundation raise $13M for Hamas?

8:2.  The believers
are only those who
,
when Allâh is mentioned, feel a fear in their hearts and when His
Verses (this Qur’ân) are recited unto them, they (i.e. the Verses)
increase their Faith; and they put their trust in their Lord (Alone);

49:15. Only
those are the believers
who have believed in Allâh and His
Messenger, and afterward doubt not but
strive with their wealth and their lives for the Cause of Allâh.

Those! They are the truthful.

61:10O You who believe! Shall I guide you to a commerce that
will save you from a painful torment
.

61:11.
That you believe in Allâh and His Messenger (Muhammad ), and that
you strive hard and fight
in the Cause of Allâh with your wealth and your lives
,
that will be better for you, if you but know!

61:12.
(If you do so) He will forgive you your sins, and admit you into
Gardens under which rivers flow, and pleasant dwelling in Gardens of
‘Adn ­ Eternity [‘Adn (Edn) Paradise], that is indeed the great success.

61:13.
And also (He will give you) another (blessing) which you love, help
from Allâh (against your enemies) and a near victory
.
And give glad tidings (O Muhammad ) to the believers.

What
is the relationship between Allah & Muslims?

9:111Verily, Allâh
has purchased of the believers their lives and their properties
;
for the price that theirs
shall be the Paradise
They fight
in Allâh’s Cause, so they kill (others) and are killed.
 It
is a promise in truth which is binding on Him in the Taurât (Torah) and
the Injeel (Gospel) and the Qur’ân. And who is truer to his covenant
than Allâh? Then rejoice in the bargain which you have concluded. That
is the supreme success .

  • They fight in Allâh’s Cause, so they kill
    (others) and are killed.

That’s
what Muslims do; they kill.  That’s what’s wrong with Muslims:
they worship and obey a bloodthirsty demon who commands them to subjugate
us.

Objections:

  • I have Muslim
    friends; nice people, well behaved.

    • Muslims are explicitly commanded, in several ayat, not to
      befriend Kuffar. I will cite one of them.
    • 60:1O you who believe! Take
      not My enemies and your enemies 
      (i.e.
      disbelievers and polytheists, etc.) as friends, showing affection towards them,
      while they have disbelieved in what has come to you of the truth (i.e.
      Islâmic Monotheism, this Qur’ân, and Muhammad ), and have driven out
      the Messenger (Muhammad ) and yourselves (from your homeland) because
      you believe in Allâh your Lord! If you have come forth to strive in My
      Cause and to seek My Good Pleasure, (then take not these disbelievers
      and polytheists, etc., as your friends). You show friendship to them in
      secret, while I am All-Aware of what you conceal and what you reveal.
      And whosoever of you
      (Muslims) does that, then indeed he has gone (far) astray, (away) from
      the Straight Path
       .
  • Most
    Muslims don’t engage in Jihad.

    • Yet.
      They haven’t been called by their Imam or Mullah. The Ummah is large
      and the battlefronts are relatively small. Once a sufficient number
      have answered the call, the rest are relieved unless an emergency
      occurs.

      • Sahih Bukhari Volume 4, Book 52, Number 311:

        Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas:

        The
        Prophet said, on the day of the Conquest of Mecca, “There is no
        migration (after the Conquest), but Jihad and good intentions, andwhen you are called for Jihad,
        you should immediately respond to the cal
        l.”

      • Abu
        Dawud Book 14, Number 2497
        :

        Narrated
        AbuUmamah:

        The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: He who does not join the
        warlike expedition
        (jihad), or equip, or looks well after a
        warrior’s family when he is away, will be smitten by Allah
        with a sudden calamity
        .
         Yazid
        ibn Abdu Rabbihi said in his tradition: ‘before the Day of
        Resurrection”.

  • Jihad is the Muslim’s struggle
    against his ego and temptations.

    •  How do Muslims kill and get killed in inner struggle;
      wrestling with temptation?  Review 9:111 & see 3:169.

JIHAD


Lets take another look at the definition of Jihad. First, as defined by Sharia.

The Reliance of the Traveller

Chapter O-9.0: Jihad
(O: Jihad means to war against non-Muslims, and is etymologically derived from the word mujahada signifying warfare to establish the religion. And it is the lesser jihad. As for the greater jihad, it is spiritual warfare against the lower self (nafs), which is why the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said as he was returning from jihad.
“We have returned from the lesser jihad to the greater jihad.”
The scriptural basis for jihad, prior to scholarly consensus (def: b-7) is such Koranic verses as:
1- “Fighting is prescribed for you” (Koran 2:216);
2- “Slay them wherever you find them” (Koran 4:89);
3- “Fight the idolators utterly” (Koran 9:36);
and such hadiths as the one related by Bukhari and Muslim that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said:
I have been commanded to fight people until they testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and perform the prayer, and pay zakat. If they say it, they have saved their blood and possessions from me, except for the rights of Islam over them. And their final reckoning is with Allah”;
and the hadith reported by Muslim,
“To go forth in the morning or evening to fight in the path of Allah is better than the whole world and everything in it.”Details concerning jihad are found in the accounts of the military expeditions of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace), including his own martial forays and those on which he dispatched others. The former consist of the ones he personally attended, some twenty-seven (others say twenty-nine) of them. He fought in eight of them, and killed only one person with his noble hand, Ubayy ibn Khalaf, at the battle of Uhud. On the latter expeditions he sent others to fight, himself remaining at Medina, and these were forty-seven in number.)

  • Jihad means to war against non-Muslims. And Moe proved it at least 74 times.  What more do we need to know?

Second, we’ll examine the translator’s commentary from The Noble Qur’an 2:190.[2:190; English translation not shown.]

V. 2:190) Al-Jihad (holy fighting) ln AlIah’s Cause (with full force of numbers
and weaponry) is given the utmost importance in Islam and is one of its pillars (on
which it stands). By Jihad Islam is established, Allah’s Word is made superior, (His
Word belng La Haha illallah which means none has the right to be worshipped but
Allah), and His Religion (Islam) is propagated. By abandoning Jihad (may Allah
protect us from that) Islam is destroyed and the Muslims fall into an inferior
position; their honour is lost, their lands are stolen, their rule and authority vanish.
Jihad is an obligatory duty In Islam on every Muslim, and he who tries to escape
from this duty, or does not in his innermost heart wish to fulfil this duty, dies with
one of the qualities of a hypocrite.
Narrated Abdullah bin Masud I asked Allah’s Messenger,  ‘O Allah’s Messenger!
what is th e best deed?’ He replied, “To offer the Salat (prayers) at their early fixed
stated times.’ I asked, ‘What is next ln goodness?” He replied, ‘To be good and
dutlful to your parents.” I further asked, ‘What is next in goodness?’ He replied,
‘To participate in Jihad in Allaha’s Cause.’ I did not ask AIIAh’s Messenger anymore

We have two definitions:

  • Jihad:
    • means to war against non-Muslims
      • signifying warfare to establish the religion
    • (holy fighting) ln AlIah’s Cause.
      • By Jihad Islam is established

Clearly those definitions tend toward aggression: “warfare to establish”; Islam is propagated.
But Abdullah Yusuf Ali disagrees:

  • v.190 : War is only permissible in self-defence,…

Likewise Muhammad Assad.

  • v.190 : This and the following verses lay down unequivocally that only self-defence (in the widest sense of the word) makes war permissible for Muslims. …

What did Allah say?

  • 2:190. And fight in the Way of Allâh those who fight you, but transgress not the limits. Truly, Allâh likes not the transgressors. [This Verse is the first one that was revealed in connection with Jihâd, but it was supplemented by another (V.9:36)].
    • Permission for defense does not rule out aggression.
  • 22:39. Permission to fight is given to those (i.e. believers against disbelievers), who are fighting them, (and) because they (believers) have been wronged, and surely, Allâh is Able to give them (believers) victory.
    • Once again, defense is permitted but offense is not barred.
  • 9:123. O you who believe! Fight those of the disbelievers who are close to you, and let them find harshness in you, and know that Allâh is with those who are the Al-Muttaqûn (the pious – see V.2:2).
    • Obvious authorization for aggression!

What did Moe say?

Sahih Bukhari Volume 1, Book 8, Number 387:
Narrated Anas bin Malik:
Allah’s Apostle said, “I have been ordered to fight the people till they say: ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah.’ And if they say so, pray like our prayers, face our Qibla and slaughter as we slaughter, then their blood and property will be sacred to us and we will not interfere with them except legally and their reckoning will be with Allah.” Narrated Maimun ibn Siyah that he asked Anas bin Malik, “O Abu Hamza! What makes the life and property of a person sacred?” He replied, “Whoever says, ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah’, faces our Qibla during the prayers, prays like us and eats our slaughtered animal, then he is a Muslim, and has got the same rights and obligations as other Muslims have.”

Sahih Bukhari Volume 4, Book 52, Number 196:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah ‘s Apostle said, ” I have been ordered to fight with the people till they say, ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah,’ and whoever says, ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah,’ his life and property will be saved by me except for Islamic law, and his accounts will be with Allah, (either to punish him or to forgive him.)”

Abu Dawud 14.2635
Narrated Anas ibn Malik:

The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: I am commanded to fight with men till they testify that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is His servant and His Apostle, face our qiblah (direction of prayer), eat what we slaughter, and pray like us. When they do that, their life and property are unlawful for us except what is due to them. They will have the same rights as the Muslims have, and have the same responsibilities as the Muslims have.

Where the Hell did he get that idea: commanded/ordered to fight?

  • 8:39. And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and polytheism: i.e. worshipping others besides Allâh) and the religion (worship) will all be for Allâh Alone [in the whole of the world ]. But if they cease (worshipping others besides Allâh), then certainly, Allâh is All-Seer of what they do.
  • 9:29. Fight against those who (1) believe not in Allâh, (2) nor in the Last Day, (3) nor forbid that which has been forbidden by Allâh and His Messenger (4) and those who acknowledge not the religion of truth (i.e. Islâm) among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), until they pay the Jizyah with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.

No mention of defense in those commands; they are imperatives of aggressive conquest. Ibn Kathir confirms it.

  • Allah commanded His Messenger to strive hard against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and to be harsh against them. … Ibn `Abbas said, “Allah commanded the Prophet to fight the disbelievers with the sword, to strive against the hypocrites with the tongue and annulled lenient treatment of them.” Ad-Dahhak commented, “Perform Jihad against the disbelievers with the sword and be harsh with the hypocrites with words, and this is the Jihad performed against them.” …The Order for Jihad against the Disbelievers and Hypocrites
  • Allah commanded His Messenger to fight the People of the Scriptures, Jews and Christians, on the ninth year of Hijrah, and he prepared his army to fight the Romans and called the people to Jihad announcing his intent and destination….The Order to fight People of the Scriptures until They give the Jizyah
  • Allah then commanded fighting the disbelievers when He said:..(…until there is no more Fitnah) meaning, Shirk. …Allah’s statement: (…and the religion (all and every kind of worship) is for Allah (Alone).) means, `So that the religion of Allah becomes dominant above all other religions.’ ….The Order to fight until there is no more Fitnah
  • Allah said, (And fight them until there is no more Fitnah, and the religion will all be for Allah alone.)…(I was commanded to fight against the people until they proclaim, `There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah.’ If and when they say it, they will preserve their blood and wealth from me, except for its right (Islamic penal code), and their reckoning is with Allah, the Exalted and Most Honored.)  …  The Order to fight to eradicate Shirk and Kufr

Jihad means war, Allah commanded Moe to make war against Pagans, Jews & Christians. What does Islamic law say about this?We turn once more to Reliance of the Traveller.

O9.1: The Obligatory Character of Jihad

Jihad is a communal obligation (def: c3.2). When enough people perform it to successfully accomplish it, it is no longer obligatory upon others (O: the evidence for which is the Prophet’s saying (Allah bless him and give him peace),

“He who provides the equipment for a soldier in jihad has himself performed jihad,”

and Allah Most High having said:

“Those of the believers who are unhurt but sit behind are not equal to those who fight in Allah’s path with their property and lives. Allah has preferred those who fight with their property and lives a whole degree above those who sit behind. And to each, Allah has promised great good” (Koran 4:95).

If none of those concerned perform jihad, and it does not happen at all, then everyone who is aware that it is obligatory is guilty of sin, if there was a possibility of having performed it. In the time of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) jihad was a communal obligation after his emigration (hijra) to Medina. As for subsequent times, there are two possible states in respect to non-Muslims.

The first is when they are in their own countries, in which case jihad (def: o9.8) is a communal obligation, and this is what our author is speaking of when he says, “Jihad is a communal obligation, meaning upon the Muslims each year.

The second state is when non-Muslims invade a Muslim country or near to one, in which case jihad is personally obligatory (def: c3.2) upon the inhabitants of that country, who must repel the non-Muslims with whatever they can).

Jihad is a communal obligation which must be performed each year, against us in our own countries. What???

O-9.8: The Objectives of Jihad
The caliph (o-25) makes war upon Jews, Christians, and Zoroastrians (N: provided he has first invited them to enter Islam in faith and practice, and if they will not, then invited them to enter the social order of Islam by paying the non-Muslim poll tax (jizya, def: o-11.4) -which is the significance of their paying it, not the money itself-while remaining in their ancestral religions) (O: and the war continues) until they become Muslim or else pay the non-Muslim poll tax (O: in accordance with the word of Allah Most High,
“Fight those who do not believe in Allah and the Last Day and who forbid not what Allah and His messenger have forbidden-who do not practice the religion of truth, being of those who have been given the Book-until they pay the poll tax out of hand and are humbled” (Koran 9.29),
the time and place for which is before the final descent of Jesus (upon whom be peace). After his final coming, nothing but Islam will be accepted from them, for taking the poll tax is only effective until Jesus’ descent (upon him and our Prophet be peace), which is the divinely revealed law of Muhammad. The coming of Jesus does not entail a separate divinely revealed law, for he will rule by the law of Muhammad. As for the Prophet’s saying (Allah bless him and give him peace),
“I am the last, there will be no prophet after me,”
this does not contradict the final coming of Jesus (upon whom be peace), since he will not rule according to the Evangel, but as a follower of our Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) ).

O-9.9
The caliph fights all other peoples until they become Muslim (O: because they are not a people with a Book, nor honored as such, and are not permitted to settle with paying the poll tax (jizya) ) (n: though according to the Hanafi school, peoples of all other religions, even idol worshippers, are permitted to live under the protection of the Islamic state if they either become Muslim or agree to pay the poll tax, the sole exceptions to which are apostates from Islam and idol worshippers who are Arabs, neither of whom has any choice but becoming Muslim (al-Hidaya sharh Bidaya al-mubtadi’ (y-21), 6.48-49) ).

So much for the defensive war theory. It is aggressive, must be performed in every year, and continues until the whole world is subjugated.

Abu Dawud Book 14, Number 2526

Narrated Anas ibn Malik:

Jihad: Conclusion


In Part 1, we compared ten translations of 2:216, which ordains fighting and makes it mandatory for Muslims. We consulted Ibn Kathir’s tafsir of that ayeh:  Jihad is made Obligatory, and learned that:

  1. Fighting is obligatory, not optional, Allah ordained it.
  2. Jihad is required from every person,
    1. to march forth
    2. to aid
    3. to support
  3. Fighting is difficult and an emotional burden; includes:
    1. being killed
    2. wounded
    3. striving against the enemy
    4. hardship of travel.
  4. Fighting is good for you; has benefits:
    1. followed by victory
    2. dominance over the enemy
    3. taking his:
      1. lands
      2. money
      3. wives & children.
  5. Refraining from fighting has negative consequences:
    1. dispossession
    2. dominance by the enemy.

In Part 2, we examined 8:39 and its tafsir, wherein we learned that Muslims are commanded to fight Pagans & disbelievers until there is no more resistance and only Allah is worshiped.

From 8:57 & 8:60, we got the first hints of the linkage between Jihad and terrorism. Defeated Kuffar are to be severely punished as a warning to others and maximum force is to be accrued to threaten them.

From 8:65, we learned of the urge to fight, and from 8:67 we learned of the mandate of genocide. and from Sahih Muslim19.4327, we learned that Moe obtained special dispensation to accrue spoils of war, relating to the title of the Surah.

In Part 3,  we explored 9:29, learning that Muslims are commanded to fight Jews & Christians until they are subjugated and pay extortion. We confirmed that by consulting Ibn Kathir’s Tafsir: The Order to fight People of the Scriptures until They give the Jizyah.

In 9:33 and its tafsir: Islam is the Religion That will dominate over all Other Religions, we learned that Islam must and will dominate all religions.

In 9:38…41 we learned the urgency & importance of marching forth in Jihad, how failure to do so will be punished.

In Part 4, we looked into Sharia, found in  The Reliance of the Traveller, discovering ample confirmation of the definition of Jihad, its declaration & execution of war against Pagans and Jews & Christians. We learned that Jihad must be performed annually and confirmed that fact from statements by Al-Ghazali & Al-Shafi’i.

In Part 5, we examined 9:111, learning the relationship between Allah and Muslims, which is master: slave. We discovered that Allah purchased the Muslims so that they fight in his cause, kill others and are killed.

From As-Saff 10-13, we learned what Muslims must do to be saved; to escape Hellfire and enter Paradise: they must participate in Jihad.

From Abu Dawud Book 14, Number 2526, we learned that: jihad will be performed continuously since the day Allah sent me as a prophet until the day the last member of my community will fight with the Dajjal (Antichrist). Meaning, from 610 to the end of the world.

From Abu Dawud Book 23, Number 3455, we learned what will happen to Muslims if they abandon Jihad for productive pursuits: “Allah will make disgrace prevail over you, and will not withdraw it until you return to your original religion. ”  Whereby we know that Jihad and Islam are synonymous.

Jihad: Part 5


In the previous installment, we found that Sharia confirms the definition of Jihad and the requirement that it be performed annually. Now we will discover Jihad’s significance and persistence in the Qur’an & hadith.

9:111. Verily, Allâh has purchased of the believers their lives and their properties; for the price that theirs shall be the Paradise. They fight in Allâh’s Cause, so they kill (others) and are killed. It is a promise in truth which is binding on Him in the Taurât (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel) and the Qur’ân. And who is truer to his covenant than Allâh? Then rejoice in the bargain which you have concluded. That is the supreme success .

The relationship between Allah and the Muslims is master: slave. Allah has purchased them to fight in his cause, killing and being killed, in return, they receive admission to Paradise.

In Surah As-Saff we discover what a Muslim must do to be saved from Hellfire and gain admission to paradise. Can you guess what it is?

61:10.  O You who believe! Shall I guide you to a commerce that will save you from a painful torment.

61:11. That you believe in Allâh and His Messenger (Muhammad), and that you strive hard and fight in the Cause of Allâh with your wealth and your lives, that will be better for you, if you but know!

61:12. (If you do so) He will forgive you your sins, and admit you into Gardens under which rivers flow, and pleasant dwelling in Gardens of ‘Adn ­ Eternity [‘Adn (Edn) Paradise], that is indeed the great success.

61:13.  And also (He will give you) another (blessing) which you love, help from Allâh (against your enemies) and a near victory. And give glad tidings (O Muhammad) to the believers.

Muslims get out of Hell and enter Paradise by participating in Jihad!

How long does this continue?

Abu Dawud Book 14, Number 2526

Narrated Anas ibn Malik:

The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: Three things are the roots of faith: to refrain from (killing) a person who utters, “There is no god but Allah” and not to declare him unbeliever whatever sin he commits, and not to excommunicate him from Islam for his any action; and jihad will be performed continuously since the day Allah sent me as a prophet until the day the last member of my community will fight with the Dajjal (Antichrist). Jihad continues from 610 to the end of the world. Now we know that Jihad is continuing & contemporary, not an anachronism.

Can Jihad be abandoned?

Abu Dawud Book 23, Number 3455:Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar:

I heard the Apostle of Allah, (peace_be_upon_him) say: When you enter into the inah transaction, hold the tails of oxen, are pleased with agriculture, and give up conducting jihad (struggle in the way of Allah). Allah will make disgrace prevail over you, and will not withdraw it until you return to your original religion.

If Muslims exchange Jihad for productive pursuits, Allah will curse them until they return to their original religion. Jihad is their religion! Jihad must continue, it can not be abandoned.

Its all just words, right? Nobody ever did any of that stuff, right? Wrong! Each of the four major hadith collections has a ‘book’ dedicated to the subject of Moe’s battles.

The last item in that list is the Jihad book from Malik’s Muwatta, an early codification of Islamic law. Its heading conveys significant information to the discerning eye.
