Jihad: Part 4


In the previous installment, we learned that Surah Al-Taubah confirms what we learned in Surah Al-Anfal.  Since Islamic law is based on the Qur’an & hadith, we can expect it to confirm what we have learned. from them. But does it?  How does
Sharia define Jihad?

The Reliance of the Traveller

Chapter O-9.0: Jihad
(O: Jihad means to war against non-Muslims, and is etymologically derived from the word mujahada signifying warfare to establish the religion. And it is the lesser jihad. As for the greater jihad, it is spiritual warfare against the lower self (nafs), which is why the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said as he was returning from jihad.
“We have returned from the lesser jihad to the greater jihad.”
The scriptural basis for jihad, prior to scholarly consensus (def: b-7) is such Koranic verses as:
1- “Fighting is prescribed for you” (Koran 2:216);
2- “Slay them wherever you find them” (Koran 4:89);
3- “Fight the idolators utterly” (Koran 9:36);
and such hadiths as the one related by Bukhari and Muslim that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said:
I have been commanded to fight people until they testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and perform the prayer, and pay zakat. If they say it, they have saved their blood and possessions from me, except for the rights of Islam over them. And their final reckoning is with Allah”;
and the hadith reported by Muslim,
“To go forth in the morning or evening to fight in the path of Allah is better than the whole world and everything in it.”Details concerning jihad are found in the accounts of the military expeditions of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace), including his own martial forays and those on which he dispatched others. The former consist of the ones he personally attended, some twenty-seven (others say twenty-nine) of them. He fought in eight of them, and killed only one person with his noble hand, Ubayy ibn Khalaf, at the battle of Uhud. On the latter expeditions he sent others to fight, himself remaining at Medina, and these were forty-seven in number.)

Jihad is war against non-Muslims!  Could any definition be more clear?  Islamic law has confirmed what we learned from the Qur’an & commentary beyond all doubt.  But what of the mandates to fight Pagans & ‘people of the book’ found in Al-Anfal & Al -Taubah? Are they also confirmed by Sharia?

O-9.8: The Objectives of Jihad
The caliph (o-25) makes war upon Jews, Christians, and Zoroastrians (N: provided he has first invited them to enter Islam in faith and practice, and if they will not, then invited them to enter the social order of Islam by paying the non-Muslim poll tax (jizya, def: o-11.4) -which is the significance of their paying it, not the money itself-while remaining in their ancestral religions) (O: and the war continues) until they become Muslim or else pay the non-Muslim poll tax (O: in accordance with the word of Allah Most High,
“Fight those who do not believe in Allah and the Last Day and who forbid not what Allah and His messenger have forbidden-who do not practice the religion of truth, being of those who have been given the Book-until they pay the poll tax out of hand and are humbled” (Koran 9.29),
the time and place for which is before the final descent of Jesus (upon whom be peace). After his final coming, nothing but Islam will be accepted from them, for taking the poll tax is only effective until Jesus’ descent (upon him and our Prophet be peace), which is the divinely revealed law of Muhammad. The coming of Jesus does not entail a separate divinely revealed law, for he will rule by the law of Muhammad. As for the Prophet’s saying (Allah bless him and give him peace),
“I am the last, there will be no prophet after me,”
this does not contradict the final coming of Jesus (upon whom be peace), since he will not rule according to the Evangel, but as a follower of our Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) ).

Here we have a clear declaration that the Caliph makes war on ‘people of the book’, which cites 9:29 as its basis.

O-9.9
The caliph fights all other peoples until they become Muslim (O: because they are not a people with a Book, nor honored as such, and are not permitted to settle with paying the poll tax (jizya) ) (n: though according to the Hanafi school, peoples of all other religions, even idol worshippers, are permitted to live under the protection of the Islamic state if they either become Muslim or agree to pay the poll tax, the sole exceptions to which are apostates from Islam and idol worshippers who are Arabs, neither of whom has any choice but becoming Muslim (al-Hidaya sharh Bidaya al-mubtadi’ (y-21), 6.48-49) ).

While not as direct as the proceeding paragraph, 9.9  pretty well fits 8:39.  Here we have two direct statements concerning the conduct of the Caliph. What we don’t know yet is how frequently he performs that action. How often does the Caliph attack Kuffar?

O9.1: The Obligatory Character of Jihad

Jihad is a communal obligation (def: c3.2). When enough people perform it to successfully accomplish it, it is no longer obligatory upon others (O: the evidence for which is the Prophet’s saying (Allah bless him and give him peace),

“He who provides the equipment for a soldier in jihad has himself performed jihad,”

and Allah Most High having said:

“Those of the believers who are unhurt but sit behind are not equal to those who fight in Allah’s path with their property and lives. Allah has preferred those who fight with their property and lives a whole degree above those who sit behind. And to each, Allah has promised great good” (Koran 4:95).

If none of those concerned perform jihad, and it does not happen at all, then everyone who is aware that it is obligatory is guilty of sin, if there was a possibility of having performed it. In the time of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) jihad was a communal obligation after his emigration (hijra) to Medina. As for subsequent times, there are two possible states in respect to non-Muslims.

The first is when they are in their own countries, in which case jihad (def: o9.8) is a communal obligation, and this is what our author is speaking of when he says, “Jihad is a communal obligation,” meaning upon the Muslims each year.

The second state is when non-Muslims invade a Muslim country or near to one, in which case jihad is personally obligatory (def: c3.2) upon the inhabitants of that country, who must repel the non-Muslims with whatever they can).

Jihad is a communal obligation, incumbent on the Muslims each year. Now is the time to seek external confirmation.

Below is what Al-Ghazali actually wrote about jihad war, and the treatment of the vanquished non-Muslim dhimmi peoples (from the Wagjiz, written in 1101 A.D.): …one must go on jihad (i.e., warlike razzias or raids) at least once a year…one may use a catapult against them [non-Muslims] when they are in a fortress, even if among them are women and children. One may set fire to them and/or drown them…If a person of the Ahl al-Kitab [People of The Book – Jews and Christians, typically] is enslaved, his marriage is [automatically] revoked…One may cut down their trees…One must destroy their useless books. Jihadists may take as booty whatever they decide…they may steal as much food as they need…

Al-Shafi’i (God have mercy on him) said: “The least that the imam must do is that he allow no year to pass without having organised a military expedition by himself, or by his raiding parties, according to the Muslims’ interest, so that the jihad will only be stopped in a year for a (reasonable) excuse.” He said: “If he did not undertake the sending of enough troops to fight, those who are absent (must) go out, and consider as an obligation that which God (who is praised) said.” I said: “What I have mentioned showed that if a group was needed to carry out an expedition, [f. 175 a] our duty was incumbent on all of them.

Two Islamic legal scholars confirmed the fact that Jihad must be performed every year.  We have learned that Jihad is physical combat and that it must be performed in every year against non-Muslims.  We are left with several critical questions:

  • Is Jihad a central, critical part of Islam?
  • Is Jihad an anachronism, limited to the founding of Islam’s empire?
  • How long will Jihad continue to be practiced?
  • Can Jihad be abandoned?

Face The Facts!


Our leader’s blathering about “extremism” & “radicalism” is unmitigated excrement. What they label extreme is the standard of Islam. Most people do not know what is in Islam’s canon of scripture & tradition, nor would they understand it if they did.

The terrible facts are exposed in documents published by the Muslim Student Assn., Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and numerous Islamic organizations.

We are told that offensive Jihad is an insignificant artifact of “extremism”. Muslims are told something else, in every Goddamn Mosque, Masjid & Madrassa.

190. And fight in the Way of Allâh[1] those who fight you, but transgress not the limits. Truly, Allâh likes not the transgressors. [This Verse is the first one that was revealed in connection with Jihâd, but it was supplemented by another (9:36)].


[1] (V.2:190) Al-Jihâd (holy fighting) in Allâh’s Cause (with full force of numbers and weaponry) is given the utmost importance in Islâm and is one of its pillar (on which it stands). By Jihâd Islâm is established, Allâh’s Word is made superior, (His Word being Lâ ilaha illallâh which means none has the right to be worshipped but Allâh), and His Religion (Islâm) is propagated. By abandoning Jihâd (may Allâh protect us from that) Islâm is destroyed and the Muslims fall into an inferior position; their honour is lost, their lands are stolen, their rule and authority vanish. Narrated ‘Abdullâh bin Mas‘ûd رضي الله عنه: I asked Allâh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم “O Allâh’s Messenger! What is the best deed?” He replied, “To offer the Salât (prayers) at their early fixed stated times.” I asked, “What is next in goodness?” He replied, “To be good and dutiful to your parents.” I further asked, “What is next in goodness?” He replied, “To participate in Jihâd in Allâh’s Cause.” I did not ask Allâh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم anymore and if I had asked him more, he would have told me more. (Sahih Al-Bukhâri, Vol.4, Hadîth No.41).

The material in brackets & parenthesis was provided by the translators to clarify the scripture. It is derived from various tafsir [exegis]. 2:190 refers to defensive Jihad, but take close look at the translator’s footnote on this ayat. Since its length and detail exceed your attention span, I will excerpt the most vital clauses.

Where did they get those ideas about abandoning Jihad? I linked it to an ahadith which makes the matter crystal clear. Doubting that you will follow up, I quote it in full.

Abu Dawud Book 23, Number 3455:

Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar:

I heard the Apostle of Allah, (peace_be_upon_him) say: When you enter into the inah transaction, hold the tails of oxen, are pleased with agriculture, and give up conducting jihad (struggle in the way of Allah). Allah will make disgrace prevail over you, and will not withdraw it until you return to your original religion.

I added emphasis to the font to make the critical phrases stand out and catch your attention. Trade Jihad for farming, and Allah will curse you. There can be no doubt of the meaning of this Islamic tradition.

Lest you doubt that offensive Jihad is the standard of Islam, not a deviation, I will quote the ayat which sanctify it.

2:216. Jihâd [1] (holy fighting in Allâh’s cause) is ordained for you (Muslims) though you dislike it, and it may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you and that you like a thing which is bad for you. Allâh knows but you do not know.

8:39. And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and polytheism, i.e. worshipping others besides Allâh) and the religion (worship) will all be for Allâh Alone [in the whole of the world[1]]. But if they cease (worshipping others besides Allâh), then certainly, Allâh is All-Seer of what they do.[2]

9:29. Fight against those who (1) believe not in Allâh, (2) nor in the Last Day, (3) nor forbid that which has been forbidden by Allâh and His Messenger Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) (4) and those who acknowledge not the religion of truth (i.e. Islâm) among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), until they pay the Jizyah [2] with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.

8:65. O Prophet (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم)! Urge the believers to fight. If there are twenty steadfast persons amongst you, they will overcome two hundreds, and if there be a hundred steadfast persons they will overcome a thousand of those who disbelieve, because they (the disbelievers) are people who do not understand.

What did Muhammad say outside the Mosque, when he was not revealing new messages from Satan?

Sahih Bukhari Volume 1, Book 8, Number 387:
Narrated Anas bin Malik:
Allah’s Apostle said, “I have been ordered to fight the people till they say: ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah.’ And if they say so, pray like our prayers, face our Qibla and slaughter as we slaughter, then their blood and property will be sacred to us and we will not interfere with them except legally and their reckoning will be with Allah.” Narrated Maimun ibn Siyah that he asked Anas bin Malik, “O Abu Hamza! What makes the life and property of a person sacred?” He replied, “Whoever says, ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah’, faces our Qibla during the prayers, prays like us and eats our slaughtered animal, then he is a Muslim, and has got the same rights and obligations as other Muslims have.”

Your blood & property are not sacred to Muslims until you become a Muslim. Open season is declared on you! There is no bag limit. The Muslim must only give 20% off the top to Moe or his Caliph.

And know that whatever of war-booty that you may gain, verily one-fifth (1/5th) of it is assigned to Allâh, and to the Messenger,…

But I’m a liar, one who distorts, perverts & mis-translates Islamic scripture. Yeah, right. Ibn Kathir, the greatest of Koranic exegetes, mis-translated, misinterpreted distorted & perverted Islam.

And Al-Misri, who compiled the all purpose go to handbook of Islamic law: Reliance of the Traveler, misinterpreted & distorted Allah’s commands, too.

Islamic law mandates making war upon Jews & Christians and all other peoples. Somewhat ambiguous; can we get a clarification?

al-Ghazali was a Sufi, and Sufi are supposed to be spiritually oriented, mystical & peaceful. Perhaps we need to consult a Sunni.

Sufi & Sunni Agree: the Caliph must attack us at least once each year. It’s a requirement of Islamic law, not a deviation from standard Islam.

But terrorism; surely it must be haram. Allah could not sanction that, could he? Only damn fools believe that!

3:151. We shall cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve, because they joined others in worship with Allâh, for which He had sent no authority; their abode will be the Fire and how evil is the abode of the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers).

8:12. (Remember) when your Lord revealed to the angels, “Verily, I am with you, so keep firm those who have believed. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who have disbelieved, so strike them over the necks, and smite over all their fingers and toes.”

13. This is because they defied and disobeyed Allâh and His Messenger. And whoever defies and disobeys Allâh and His Messenger, then verily, Allâh is Severe in punishment.

14. This is (the torment), so taste it; and surely for the disbelievers is the torment of the Fire.

But surely that must be allegory, not something they’d ever perform. Yeah, right.

33:26. And those of the people of the Scripture who backed them (the disbelievers), Allâh brought them down from their forts and cast terror into their hearts, (so that) a group (of them) you killed, and a group (of them) you made captives.

27. And He caused you to inherit their lands, and their houses, and their riches, and a land which you had not trodden (before). And Allâh is Able to do all things.

Is this confirmed?

. Allah made me victorious by awe, (by His frightening my enemies) for a distance of one month’s journey.

Bukhari Volume 4, Book 52, Number 220:
Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah’s Apostle said, “I have been sent with the shortest expressions bearing the widest meanings, and I have been made victorious with terror (cast in the hearts of the enemy), and while I was sleeping, the keys of the treasures of the world were brought to me and put in my hand.” Abu Huraira added: Allah’s Apostle has left the world and now you, people, are bringing out those treasures (i.e. the Prophet did not benefit by them).

Now you know that the elected leaders of Western Civilization are damned liars, who chant “peace, peace” where there is no peace and declare the enemy of all mankind to be our steadfast ally. What are you going to do with this new found knowledge? Will you conceal it, keep it private, shove it to the back of your mind and forget it? Or will you join me in sharing it? The choice is yours. If you want your children & grand children to live in peace, prosperity & freedom, you will join me in propagating knowledge of the evil which seeks to subjugate them. It should have 80 million signatures, not just 80!!! In adition to the ayat & ahadith I use, Syed quotes Ishak & Tabari, laying bare the evil which is the core of Islam.
  5. International Qur’an Petition. This petition points out Islam’s static human rights violations and prays to the World Court for injunctive relief. It was created as a counter attack to the OIC’s program to amend ICERD to criminalize blog posts such as this one.

As of the date of this editing, this post has been viewed 186 times. On October 21, ’09 it was viewed 6 times.  Four searchers sought information about “facts about Reliance of the Traveller” and two sought “freedom facts”.

Reliance of the Traveller is a compilation of Shafi’ite Fiqh: rulings by Islamic Jurists. It is recognized as authentic by the Sheikhs at Al-Azhar University.  It is more than 1200 pages long, divided into books, each of which is named with a single letter.

Book O lays down the law on “Justice”. Its ninth chapter lays down the laws of Jihad, defining it, describing the obligation to perform it, stating its objectives (quoted above) and the rules of war.

Islamic law is based on Allah’s word and Moe’s exemplary conduct and speech. Note how O9.8 specifies 9:29 as its scriptural foundation.  By comparing the two texts, we discover the fatal fact that Allah’s imperatives, enshrined in the Qur’an, are to be believed in and implemented.
