Bukhari Ch 61 # 2756: …It is mentioned from Ibn ‘Umar from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, “My provision has been placed under the shadow of my spear, and abasement and humility have been placed on the one who disobeys my command.

And when there comes to them a sign (from Allâh) they say: “We shall not believe until we receive the like of that which the Messengers of Allâh had received.” Allâh knows best with whom to place His Message. Humiliation and disgrace from Allâh and a severe torment will overtake the criminals (polytheists, sinners, etc.) for that which they used to plot.

Indignity is put over them wherever they may be, except when under a covenant (of protection) from Allâh, and from men; they have drawn on themselves the Wrath of Allâh, and destruction is put over them. This is because they disbelieved in the Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allâh and killed the Prophets without right. This is because they disobeyed (Allâh) and used to transgress beyond bounds (in Allâh’s disobedience, crimes and sins).

Sahih Bukhari Volume 3, Book 37, Number 495:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Whenever a dead man in debt was brought to Allah’s Apostle he would ask, “Has he left anything to repay his debt?” If he was informed that he had left something to repay his debts, he would offer his funeral prayer, otherwise he would tell the Muslims to offer their friend’s funeral prayer. When Allah made the Prophet wealthy through conquests, he said, “I am more rightful than other believers to be the guardian of the believers, so if a Muslim dies while in debt, I am responsible for the repayment of his debt, and whoever leaves wealth (after his death) it will belong to his heirs. ”

Bukhari Volume 4, Book 52, Number 220:
Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah’s Apostle said, “I have been sent with the shortest expressions bearing the widest meanings, and I have been made victorious with terror (cast in the hearts of the enemy), and while I was sleeping, the keys of the treasures of the world were brought to me and put in my hand.“…

Muslim Book 019, Number 4327:
The spoils of war were not made lawful for any people before us, This is because Allah saw our weakness and humility and made them lawful for us.

8:1. They ask you (O Muhammad) about the spoils of war. Say: “The spoils are for Allâh and the Messenger.” So fear Allâh and adjust all matters of difference among you, and obey Allâh and His Messenger (Muhammad), if you are believers.

8:41.And know that whatever of war-booty that you may gain, verily one-fifth (1/5th) of it is assigned to Allâh, and to the Messenger, and to the near relatives [of the Messenger (Muhammad)], (and also) the orphans, Al-Masâkin (the poor) and the wayfarer, if you have believed in Allâh and in that which We sent down to Our slave (Muhammad) on the Day of criterion (between right and wrong), the Day when the two forces met (the battle of Badr) – And Allâh is Able to do all things.

8:67. It is not for a Prophet that he should have prisoners of war (and free them with ransom) until he had made a great slaughter (among his enemies) in the land. You desire the good of this world (i.e. the money of ransom for freeing the captives), but Allâh desires (for you) the Hereafter. And Allâh is All-Mighty, All-Wise.

  • You desire the good of this world (i.e. the money of ransom for freeing the captives) This sums it up nicely. Allah knew Moe’s motivation: booty & ransom.

33:26.And those of the people of the Scripture who backed them (the disbelievers) Allâh brought them down from their forts and cast terror into their hearts, (so that) a group (of them) you killed, and a group (of them) you made captives.
33:27. And He caused you to inherit their lands, and their houses, and their riches, and a land which you had not trodden (before). And Allâh is Able to do all things.

48:20. Allâh has promised you abundant spoils that you will capture, and He has hastened for you this, and He has restrained the hands of men from you, that it may be a sign for the believers, and that He may guide you to a Straight Path.

Muhammad was not a Prophet, he was a pirate, preying upon the human race. This fatal fact is clear on the face of the Qur’an & Hadith which were passed down from mouth to ear and compiled by his friends, not his enemies.

Islam: Religion of peace. Malik’s Muwatta Book 21, Number 21.12.21:

Yahya related to me that Malik said that he had heard that Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz used to say, “The man on horse-back has two shares, and the man on foot has one.”

Malik added, “I continue to hear the same.”

Malik, when asked whether a man who was present with several horses took a share for all of them, said, “I have never heard that. I think that there is only a share for the horse on which he fought.”

Malik said, “I think that foreign horses and half-breeds are considered as horses because Allah, the Blessed, the Exalted, said in His Book, ‘All horses, and mules, and asses, for you to ride, and as an adornment.’ (Sura16 ayat 8). He said, the Mighty, the Majestic, ‘Make ready for them whatever force and strings of horses you can, to terrify thereby the enemy of Allah and your enemy.’ (Sura 8 ayat 60). I think that foreign breeds and half-breeds are considered as horses if the governor accepts them.”

Said ibn al-Musayyab was asked about working horses, and whether there was zakat on them. He said, “Is there any zakat on horses.?”

Jihad: Conclusion


In Part 1, we compared ten translations of 2:216, which ordains fighting and makes it mandatory for Muslims. We consulted Ibn Kathir’s tafsir of that ayeh:  Jihad is made Obligatory, and learned that:

  1. Fighting is obligatory, not optional, Allah ordained it.
  2. Jihad is required from every person,
    1. to march forth
    2. to aid
    3. to support
  3. Fighting is difficult and an emotional burden; includes:
    1. being killed
    2. wounded
    3. striving against the enemy
    4. hardship of travel.
  4. Fighting is good for you; has benefits:
    1. followed by victory
    2. dominance over the enemy
    3. taking his:
      1. lands
      2. money
      3. wives & children.
  5. Refraining from fighting has negative consequences:
    1. dispossession
    2. dominance by the enemy.

In Part 2, we examined 8:39 and its tafsir, wherein we learned that Muslims are commanded to fight Pagans & disbelievers until there is no more resistance and only Allah is worshiped.

From 8:57 & 8:60, we got the first hints of the linkage between Jihad and terrorism. Defeated Kuffar are to be severely punished as a warning to others and maximum force is to be accrued to threaten them.

From 8:65, we learned of the urge to fight, and from 8:67 we learned of the mandate of genocide. and from Sahih Muslim19.4327, we learned that Moe obtained special dispensation to accrue spoils of war, relating to the title of the Surah.

In Part 3,  we explored 9:29, learning that Muslims are commanded to fight Jews & Christians until they are subjugated and pay extortion. We confirmed that by consulting Ibn Kathir’s Tafsir: The Order to fight People of the Scriptures until They give the Jizyah.

In 9:33 and its tafsir: Islam is the Religion That will dominate over all Other Religions, we learned that Islam must and will dominate all religions.

In 9:38…41 we learned the urgency & importance of marching forth in Jihad, how failure to do so will be punished.

In Part 4, we looked into Sharia, found in  The Reliance of the Traveller, discovering ample confirmation of the definition of Jihad, its declaration & execution of war against Pagans and Jews & Christians. We learned that Jihad must be performed annually and confirmed that fact from statements by Al-Ghazali & Al-Shafi’i.

In Part 5, we examined 9:111, learning the relationship between Allah and Muslims, which is master: slave. We discovered that Allah purchased the Muslims so that they fight in his cause, kill others and are killed.

From As-Saff 10-13, we learned what Muslims must do to be saved; to escape Hellfire and enter Paradise: they must participate in Jihad.

From Abu Dawud Book 14, Number 2526, we learned that: jihad will be performed continuously since the day Allah sent me as a prophet until the day the last member of my community will fight with the Dajjal (Antichrist). Meaning, from 610 to the end of the world.

From Abu Dawud Book 23, Number 3455, we learned what will happen to Muslims if they abandon Jihad for productive pursuits: “Allah will make disgrace prevail over you, and will not withdraw it until you return to your original religion. ”  Whereby we know that Jihad and Islam are synonymous.

Jihad: Part 5


In the previous installment, we found that Sharia confirms the definition of Jihad and the requirement that it be performed annually. Now we will discover Jihad’s significance and persistence in the Qur’an & hadith.

9:111. Verily, Allâh has purchased of the believers their lives and their properties; for the price that theirs shall be the Paradise. They fight in Allâh’s Cause, so they kill (others) and are killed. It is a promise in truth which is binding on Him in the Taurât (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel) and the Qur’ân. And who is truer to his covenant than Allâh? Then rejoice in the bargain which you have concluded. That is the supreme success .

The relationship between Allah and the Muslims is master: slave. Allah has purchased them to fight in his cause, killing and being killed, in return, they receive admission to Paradise.

In Surah As-Saff we discover what a Muslim must do to be saved from Hellfire and gain admission to paradise. Can you guess what it is?

61:10.  O You who believe! Shall I guide you to a commerce that will save you from a painful torment.

61:11. That you believe in Allâh and His Messenger (Muhammad), and that you strive hard and fight in the Cause of Allâh with your wealth and your lives, that will be better for you, if you but know!

61:12. (If you do so) He will forgive you your sins, and admit you into Gardens under which rivers flow, and pleasant dwelling in Gardens of ‘Adn ­ Eternity [‘Adn (Edn) Paradise], that is indeed the great success.

61:13.  And also (He will give you) another (blessing) which you love, help from Allâh (against your enemies) and a near victory. And give glad tidings (O Muhammad) to the believers.

Muslims get out of Hell and enter Paradise by participating in Jihad!

How long does this continue?

Abu Dawud Book 14, Number 2526

Narrated Anas ibn Malik:

The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: Three things are the roots of faith: to refrain from (killing) a person who utters, “There is no god but Allah” and not to declare him unbeliever whatever sin he commits, and not to excommunicate him from Islam for his any action; and jihad will be performed continuously since the day Allah sent me as a prophet until the day the last member of my community will fight with the Dajjal (Antichrist). The tyranny of any tyrant and the justice of any just (ruler) will not invalidate it. One must have faith in Divine decree.

Jihad continues from 610 to the end of the world. Now we know that Jihad is continuing & contemporary, not an anachronism.

Can Jihad be abandoned?

Abu Dawud Book 23, Number 3455:Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar:

I heard the Apostle of Allah, (peace_be_upon_him) say: When you enter into the inah transaction, hold the tails of oxen, are pleased with agriculture, and give up conducting jihad (struggle in the way of Allah). Allah will make disgrace prevail over you, and will not withdraw it until you return to your original religion.

If Muslims exchange Jihad for productive pursuits, Allah will curse them until they return to their original religion. Jihad is their religion! Jihad must continue, it can not be abandoned.

Its all just words, right? Nobody ever did any of that stuff, right? Wrong! Each of the four major hadith collections has a ‘book’ dedicated to the subject of Moe’s battles.

The last item in that list is the Jihad book from Malik’s Muwatta, an early codification of Islamic law. Its heading conveys significant information to the discerning eye.

Jihad: Part 4


In the previous installment, we learned that Surah Al-Taubah confirms what we learned in Surah Al-Anfal.  Since Islamic law is based on the Qur’an & hadith, we can expect it to confirm what we have learned. from them. But does it?  How does
Sharia define Jihad?

The Reliance of the Traveller

Chapter O-9.0: Jihad
(O: Jihad means to war against non-Muslims, and is etymologically derived from the word mujahada signifying warfare to establish the religion. And it is the lesser jihad. As for the greater jihad, it is spiritual warfare against the lower self (nafs), which is why the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said as he was returning from jihad.
“We have returned from the lesser jihad to the greater jihad.”
The scriptural basis for jihad, prior to scholarly consensus (def: b-7) is such Koranic verses as:
1- “Fighting is prescribed for you” (Koran 2:216);
2- “Slay them wherever you find them” (Koran 4:89);
3- “Fight the idolators utterly” (Koran 9:36);
and such hadiths as the one related by Bukhari and Muslim that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said:
I have been commanded to fight people until they testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and perform the prayer, and pay zakat. If they say it, they have saved their blood and possessions from me, except for the rights of Islam over them. And their final reckoning is with Allah”;
and the hadith reported by Muslim,
“To go forth in the morning or evening to fight in the path of Allah is better than the whole world and everything in it.”Details concerning jihad are found in the accounts of the military expeditions of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace), including his own martial forays and those on which he dispatched others. The former consist of the ones he personally attended, some twenty-seven (others say twenty-nine) of them. He fought in eight of them, and killed only one person with his noble hand, Ubayy ibn Khalaf, at the battle of Uhud. On the latter expeditions he sent others to fight, himself remaining at Medina, and these were forty-seven in number.)

Jihad is war against non-Muslims!  Could any definition be more clear?  Islamic law has confirmed what we learned from the Qur’an & commentary beyond all doubt.  But what of the mandates to fight Pagans & ‘people of the book’ found in Al-Anfal & Al -Taubah? Are they also confirmed by Sharia?

O-9.8: The Objectives of Jihad
The caliph (o-25) makes war upon Jews, Christians, and Zoroastrians (N: provided he has first invited them to enter Islam in faith and practice, and if they will not, then invited them to enter the social order of Islam by paying the non-Muslim poll tax (jizya, def: o-11.4) -which is the significance of their paying it, not the money itself-while remaining in their ancestral religions) (O: and the war continues) until they become Muslim or else pay the non-Muslim poll tax (O: in accordance with the word of Allah Most High,
“Fight those who do not believe in Allah and the Last Day and who forbid not what Allah and His messenger have forbidden-who do not practice the religion of truth, being of those who have been given the Book-until they pay the poll tax out of hand and are humbled” (Koran 9.29),
the time and place for which is before the final descent of Jesus (upon whom be peace). After his final coming, nothing but Islam will be accepted from them, for taking the poll tax is only effective until Jesus’ descent (upon him and our Prophet be peace), which is the divinely revealed law of Muhammad. The coming of Jesus does not entail a separate divinely revealed law, for he will rule by the law of Muhammad. As for the Prophet’s saying (Allah bless him and give him peace),
“I am the last, there will be no prophet after me,”
this does not contradict the final coming of Jesus (upon whom be peace), since he will not rule according to the Evangel, but as a follower of our Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) ).

Here we have a clear declaration that the Caliph makes war on ‘people of the book’, which cites 9:29 as its basis.

O-9.9
The caliph fights all other peoples until they become Muslim (O: because they are not a people with a Book, nor honored as such, and are not permitted to settle with paying the poll tax (jizya) ) (n: though according to the Hanafi school, peoples of all other religions, even idol worshippers, are permitted to live under the protection of the Islamic state if they either become Muslim or agree to pay the poll tax, the sole exceptions to which are apostates from Islam and idol worshippers who are Arabs, neither of whom has any choice but becoming Muslim (al-Hidaya sharh Bidaya al-mubtadi’ (y-21), 6.48-49) ).

While not as direct as the proceeding paragraph, 9.9  pretty well fits 8:39.  Here we have two direct statements concerning the conduct of the Caliph. What we don’t know yet is how frequently he performs that action. How often does the Caliph attack Kuffar?

O9.1: The Obligatory Character of Jihad

Jihad is a communal obligation (def: c3.2). When enough people perform it to successfully accomplish it, it is no longer obligatory upon others (O: the evidence for which is the Prophet’s saying (Allah bless him and give him peace),

“He who provides the equipment for a soldier in jihad has himself performed jihad,”

and Allah Most High having said:

“Those of the believers who are unhurt but sit behind are not equal to those who fight in Allah’s path with their property and lives. Allah has preferred those who fight with their property and lives a whole degree above those who sit behind. And to each, Allah has promised great good” (Koran 4:95).

If none of those concerned perform jihad, and it does not happen at all, then everyone who is aware that it is obligatory is guilty of sin, if there was a possibility of having performed it. In the time of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) jihad was a communal obligation after his emigration (hijra) to Medina. As for subsequent times, there are two possible states in respect to non-Muslims.

The first is when they are in their own countries, in which case jihad (def: o9.8) is a communal obligation, and this is what our author is speaking of when he says, “Jihad is a communal obligation,” meaning upon the Muslims each year.

The second state is when non-Muslims invade a Muslim country or near to one, in which case jihad is personally obligatory (def: c3.2) upon the inhabitants of that country, who must repel the non-Muslims with whatever they can).

Jihad is a communal obligation, incumbent on the Muslims each year. Now is the time to seek external confirmation.

Below is what Al-Ghazali actually wrote about jihad war, and the treatment of the vanquished non-Muslim dhimmi peoples (from the Wagjiz, written in 1101 A.D.): …one must go on jihad (i.e., warlike razzias or raids) at least once a year…one may use a catapult against them [non-Muslims] when they are in a fortress, even if among them are women and children. One may set fire to them and/or drown them…If a person of the Ahl al-Kitab [People of The Book – Jews and Christians, typically] is enslaved, his marriage is [automatically] revoked…One may cut down their trees…One must destroy their useless books. Jihadists may take as booty whatever they decide…they may steal as much food as they need…

Al-Shafi’i (God have mercy on him) said: “The least that the imam must do is that he allow no year to pass without having organised a military expedition by himself, or by his raiding parties, according to the Muslims’ interest, so that the jihad will only be stopped in a year for a (reasonable) excuse.” He said: “If he did not undertake the sending of enough troops to fight, those who are absent (must) go out, and consider as an obligation that which God (who is praised) said.” I said: “What I have mentioned showed that if a group was needed to carry out an expedition, [f. 175 a] our duty was incumbent on all of them.

Two Islamic legal scholars confirmed the fact that Jihad must be performed every year.  We have learned that Jihad is physical combat and that it must be performed in every year against non-Muslims.  We are left with several critical questions:

  • Is Jihad a central, critical part of Islam?
  • Is Jihad an anachronism, limited to the founding of Islam’s empire?
  • How long will Jihad continue to be practiced?
  • Can Jihad be abandoned?

We will turn to the Qur’an & hadith for the answers in the next installment.

Jihad: Part 3


In the previous installment, we learned that Surah A-Anfal confirms rather than abrogates 2:216. We learned that the Surah really is about war booty and warmongering designed to bring in more.  Now we turn to Surah Al-Taubah: repentance & dispensation. Too many Muslims lagged behind when Moe and his companions marched on Tabuk. This Surah is about cussing them out; making them renew their oaths of alliegience to Moe. But it is more than that, it is a declaration of war.

9:29.Fight against those who (1) believe not in Allâh, (2) nor in the Last Day, (3) nor forbid that which has been forbidden by Allâh and His Messenger (4) and those who acknowledge not the religion of truth (i.e. Islâm) among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), until they pay the Jizyah with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.

(Fight against those who believe not in Allah, nor in the Last Day, nor forbid that which has been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, and those who acknowledge not the religion of truth among the People of the Scripture,) This honorable Ayah was revealed with the order to fight the People of the Book, after the pagans were defeated, the people entered Allah’s religion in large numbers, and the Arabian Peninsula was secured under the Muslims’ control. Allah commanded His Messenger to fight the People of the Scriptures, Jews and Christians, on the ninth year of Hijrah, and he prepared his army to fight the Romans and called the people to Jihad announcing his intent and destination. The Messenger sent his intent to various Arab areas around Al-Madinah to gather forces, and he collected an army of thirty thousand. Some people from Al-Madinah and some hypocrites, in and around it, lagged behind, for that year was a year of drought and intense heat. The Messenger of Allah marched, heading towards Ash-Sham to fight the Romans until he reached Tabuk, where he set camp for about twenty days next to its water resources. He then prayed to Allah for a decision and went back to Al-Madinah because it was a hard year and the people were weak, as we will mention, Allah willing. The Order to fight People of the Scriptures until They give the Jizyah

Once again, we see that the Qur’an says what it means and means what it says.  Allah commanded his messenger to fight Jews and Christians.

9:33. It is He Who has sent His Messenger (Muhammad) with guidance and the religion of truth (Islâm), to make it superior over all religions even though the Mushrikûn (polytheists, pagans, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allâh) hate (it).

(This matter (Islam) will keep spreading as far as the night and day reach, until Allah will not leave a house made of mud or hair, but will make this religion enter it, while bringing might to a mighty person (a Muslim) and humiliation to a disgraced person (who rejects Islam). Might with which Allah elevates Islam (and its people) and disgrace with which Allah humiliates disbelief (and its people).) Tamim Ad-Dari ﴿who was a Christian before Islam﴾ used to say, “I have come to know the meaning of this Hadith in my own people. Those who became Muslims among them acquired goodness, honor and might. Disgrace, humiliation and Jizyah befell those who remained disbelievers.”  Islam is the Religion That will dominate over all Other Religions

9:38. O you who believe! What is the matter with you, that when you are asked to march forth in the Cause of Allâh (i.e. Jihâd) you cling heavily to the earth? Are you pleased with the life of this world rather than the Hereafter? But little is the enjoyment of the life of this world as compared with the Hereafter.
9:39. If you march not forth, He will punish you with a painful torment and will replace you by another people, and you cannot harm Him at all, and Allah is Able to do all things.
9:41. March forth, whether you are light (being healthy, young and wealthy) or heavy (being ill, old and poor), strive hard with your wealth and your lives in the Cause of Allâh. This is better for you, if you but knew.

Far from abrogating the mandate to fight, Surah Al-Taubah confirms and amplifies it. A new command to fight Jews & Christians is added, along with potent complaints and threats against those who refuse to fight.

In the next installment, we will look for confirmation in Sharia, Islamic law.
